Yoinked from [livejournal.com profile] ratbastrd.

Planned Parenthood is doing something I approve of very, very much. They're holding a pledge drive. Y'know, the "pledge $x per y for a period of time." This in itself is not innovative. However...

One of their offices in Pennsylvania is currently getting a lot of picketers/protestors. So, they're doing a "pledge-a-picket!" You sign up to donate $x (as low as 10 cents) per protestor who shows up in the months of October and November. PP tracks these and posts signs outside showing picketers how much money their presence is making for Planned Parenthood!

Link to Planned Parenthood's page.

$.10/protestor, coming their way from me. It's not much, but I know I'll be able to afford it. :)

Something similar has been done before with Fred Phelps and his Westboro "Baptist" "Church" -- they've been picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq, with their usual "God hates fags" and "Thank God for 9/11" signs, and people have tried doing pledge-a-thons, getting people to pledge money per hour that Phelps protests, to go to GLBT organizations, and making sure they were publicized enough, in advance, that Phelps would know about them. Turned out it worked pretty well: motherfucker couldn't stand the thought that his protesting longer would actually help the people he hates so much, and on at least one occasion he cut a protest short.

The thing is, except for things like these picket-a-thon pledges, there's no reason to ever pay any attention to Phelps. He's so insane and so vile that even the craziest of the crazies in the Republican party won't listen to him. I put "Baptist" in the name of his organization in scare quotes because his familiarity with the teachings of the Baptist church, or any church for that matter, seems quite tenuous, but I put "Church" in quotes because it consists almost entirely of his extended family. Phelps only wins if he gets people to pay attention to him.

Pat Robertson, on the other hand, is a real threat.

Pat Robertson isn't a threat. He's a downright catastrophe - and that's coming from a conservative. We were kinda hoping he would go down to Latin America after his threats that way someone down there would deal with him :P

My favorite Robertson quote:
"I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out'."

You say tomato....

The best part about that quote is that it's a lie. He said that "if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we should go ahead and do it."

If I was the protestors I would try to get someone to do matching funds. Whatever PP got...the protestors got.

while I certainly don't agree with the practices of SOME people at SOME planned parenthood locations, I think its a pretty nifty idea :P Very unique :) Just think of all the companies that could emerge from bankruptcies if they did this with striking union workers that were picketing :P

Yup! I would be uncomfortable about the idea and not support it if they weren't making their actions known to the protestors, but if they really are putting a sign out there so that everything is out in the open, I think it's great. This gives the protestors options to do what waya said and counter the efforts!

I love the way you do your make-up, complete stranger. Its very becoming on your complexion. You just don't often see people who match their make-up color schemes with their complexion so well. My compliments.

also, i have to admit i jacked up the color saturation on that pic.... this icon is the actual untouched pic, which is slightly less vibrant. :)

'ats alright, luv. I mess with color saturation myself. AND I'm back to my normal dark blonde now. (As seen in THIS icon)

Either way, you're simply lovely :)
