Yoinked from [livejournal.com profile] snarkyman: Some of the best shots from a Katrina insider that we've seen yet.

The completely-looted-stripped-bare pharmacy in a nearby Winn-Dixie took my breath away.

There are some really great pictures there. I was kind of disturbed by the photographer's proselytizing, and apparent racism, but the images themselves are great.

Agreed on pretty much all counts.

Hmm, the timeline is very interesting to me. During the week of the hurricane, I was in Alabama on business. So I'm just now starting to hear about all the controversy over the slow responses and the like. While not attempting to excuse the slow response, It seems that on the 2nd day, there was no 'real' disaster. By the 3rd and 4th days, its obviously very serious. Any one else have a better grasp of how these pictures fit in the overall picture?

Yeah, I found that interesting, too. It certainly looked like there was no need for massive rescue work on the 2nd day! But on the other hand, isn't it the disaster teams' job to determine that there WILL be a disaster, after the breach of the levee?

You are assuming bueracracy (spelling?) would in fact inspect the levee's. That also assumes they did not evacuate themselves, and left no one to actually check on their status after the hurricane hit. Remember, the levee would have broken before anyone could have realistically returned to the area. I honestly think a non-partisaned investigation would be very good in this case. Unfortunately, its already become highly politically charged and a massive blame fest.

The other thing was that you had thousands upon thousands of people in the Superdome and the Convention Center... with no supplies, no one in charge, and no indication of where they should go, if the should go, or what they should do. Adding flooding to the Superdome situation just made it worse.

There is more to say here, but I'm really tired, so I'll save it until I can be coherent.
