Last night I directed [livejournal.com profile] londo towards The Ur-Quan Masters, the free PC release of the old Star Control II game. He had never heard of it. When I woke up this morning, he was still awake and playing it, although he had only just started (but he had met Fwiffo!)

The time I normally spend hitting the alarm clock for 'just 5 more minutes' I spent watching/advising him, instead. Now I wanna play. :(

Well, RPG in the same sense as Adventures of Zelda and such.

is it text based?

Nope! Purty pictures. The kind where you're talking to someone, and it shows a picture of their face and text of what you're saying to go along with the sound, and then you have three or so selections of what to say back to them...

According to some people (sometimes including me), The Best Game Evar. Even those who don't rank it that high often rank it in the top ten. Lots of interesting gameplay modes, and an incredibly cool (and moving) story, with very memorable characters (yay Fwiffo!).

Also, one of the few games ever where your *lack* of action can have a significant effect on the story. Hint: if you get a distress signal, don't just assume that you can take your time dealing with it -- time actually passes in this game. [Failing to save people won't lose you the game, but it may make it harder...]

One of my since-childhood dim memories of the game is watching spheres of influence shrink and disappear...

I have to say that I am glad there is at least /one/ person on my friends list who will know what the fuck I am talking about if I say that *campers* have the best *parties* in the *middle*.

Or not know what I'm talking about, but in the right way.

Prepare for the cleansing."

You have attacked us before, and we survived! You cannot defeat us. Submit!

"We did. You did. Yes we can. No."

The asking about Androsynth is so *frumple* we are not happy.
Do not asking it so much.
It is better not to *frumple* or else there is so much problems.
No more Androsynth is better.

what system was it originally on (if it was ported to the PC)?

It was originally a PC game. There was a 3DO release as well, which is the version The Ur-Quan Masters works from, since it's the only one the original developers could find the source code for (since they donated it to The Ur-Quan Masters project). The 3DO version had a few bells and whistles, like voice tracks, added, but was functionally the same as the PC version.
