To summarize the last post:
  • Spend 73 days at a hospital in a private suite with no contact with the outside world (no time cues). No windows, watches, clocks, live TV, radio, phone calls, or visitors. Allowed are: books, art supplies, musical instruments, possibly VCR/DVD (they said no LIVE TV...).

  • Various tests during that time, including at-the-computer tests (for reaction time, memory, mood, etc) as well as physical tests such as EEG, temperature, blood, saliva, and urine tests.

  • Final payment: At least $10,000 for the entire study. !!!!!!!

  • Pros:
  • Lots of money. I could get completely out of debt.

  • Spare time to think, practice musical instruments, and read the long list of books I want to read. And think.

  • Cons:
  • 73 days away from my life, my cats, and all of you.

  • No exercise other than light stretching (for reasons of messing up body temperature readings). This is con for a couple of different reasons.

  • I might not be accepted for reasons of mental health. If nothing else, I am dysthymic.

  • While in, I would have no clue how long I'd been there, and how long until getting out. I can see getting really freaky about that. "I've been in here for six months, I swear it! LET ME OUT!!!"

  • I'm sure this list will grow...

Whoa, sounds like my first apartment aside from the no contact with people and the money.

Um, your first apartment required blood and urine samples? And a rectal temperature sensor?

Well, I was thinking the lack of television and electronics but when I was in the process of leaving my butt did hurt so it maybe that's what it was.

A good thing about being currently unemployed, I suppose. :)

Wow. My sense of time is horribly fucked up to begin with. There's no way I'd make it. I'd be killing people inside of a week, I'm sure of it.

Ooh, hey, I bet you'd have an answer to one of my questions about doing this: What would I have to do legally before going in to make sure my roommate (or whomever) could pay things in my place and other possibly-important stuff?

Do you get to socialize with other participants? I'd be freaking out if I only talked to doctors and nurses for 73 days!

I don't know. It doesn't specifically say so, but it specifically says researchers... So I don't know. Depending on how chatty they were, I think I'd be fine.

I finally read through the whole document. Rectal thermometer, IV catheter, frequent urine samples, and food prepared by their dietician.

Still, if I wasn't working, I'd be seriously, seriously tempted... the opportunity to reflect on yourself for 73 days seems like it could be an interesting spiritual kind of experience.

I'm all okay with the medical parts, perhaps not enthusiastic but not seriously put off. And asking about the food is on my list of things to do before applying ;)

Yep. I hope for much reflection.
