I just bought:

a black mid-tower case
a case fan
a motherboard
a fan for the motherboard
a Gforce2 card
a floppy drive
a cd-rw drive (24X10X40)
a 20 gig hard drive
128 megs of ram
a AMD Athlon XP 1700+ processor

Soon, when I have more money, I will buy a keyboard, sound card, and monitor. And when the prices go back down, I will buy more ram.

I plan on using Teddyville's keyboard and monitor until then. And onboard sound.

I have a mouse, speakers, and a network card.

Am I missing anything?

I'm shaking. I'm so happy to have a desktop computer! And I can afford it. It'll hinder the debt-free-by-May, but I'll still have OLD debts paid off by May.

Also, I will need some Windows action. *twiddle*

And I will need someone to help me put it all together when the parts come in :)

Brendan is going to help me :) I don't need tons of help, but I do need someone who knows about putting together motherboards and such. I can do the other stuff... :)

And yeah, a lot of it is just pushing really hard and hoping things don't break!!

if by "putting together motherboards" you mean putting the processor and heatsync and stuff in place, then it's really easy. I have some thermal paste if you don't have anything. as for the rest, it's pretty much trial and terror. I have a copy of windows 2000 that you can use to install if necessary, but I don't know if it will copy properly if you wanted a copy, as it's a copy itself. you're welcome to try.

I very strongly recommend splitting your harddrive into a system partition and a data partition, if you don't do it already. it makes reformatting in the event of failure a much easier experience, since you only have to re-install the OS and programs, and you can keep all your good stuff. you should mention this to brendan or whoever sets it up; I did it when I re-formatted a month or two ago and am very pleased. I think 6GB is a good size, maybe more if you use lots of programs.

speaking of programs, I have office 2000, ezcd5, nero4, and photoshop5 laying around if you want them. just let me know! a new computer is such an exciting time.

I won't need the thermal paste... It's got a thermal pad on it, which I know isn't the greatest thing, but I figured hey why the hell not.

I'd be interested in some of those programs, yeah! And as to the partitioning, I'm already wanting to partition off about 5 gigs for a dual boot system... but what you say sounds very smart. I will think about it, how I will work things out.

I tip from someone who knows:

Do NOT use the thermal pad that comes on your heat sink. That stuff is called TIM (Thermal Interface Material), and in addition to not conducting heat as well as a decent thermal paste, it also makes a huge mess if you ever have to take your heat sink back off your processor for any reason. It only takes a few seconds to scrape the TIM pad off the heat sink with a razor blade or screwdriver, and thermal paste is cheap (or free, if you get it from Chris)...and it only takes a tiny little dab.

Well then, maybe Chris (andor you!) should come over and show me how to do that when the time comes. All the parts will be coming in while I'm at Spring Break, so basically on the Monday afterwards (or the Sunday if we get back early!) it'll be assembly time...

Don't forget about some mp3 storage. A couple of these babies will give you an adequate 240 gigs:
<a href="http://www.storagereview.com/welcome.pl/http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200201/20020124WD1200JB_1.html>Maxtor DiamondMax HD</a> I may or may not have a monitor to sell you relatively cheap in the near future. We'll see.

I specifically wanted a 20 gig hard drive and not anything larger because I plan on storing MP3's on CD, using the CD-R. I understand how it's nice to have all your MP3's on hand there on a hard drive to access, but I don't think that currently it's worth the money.

Is the monitor black? If so, then we might have a deal. If not, well, I'm being a little eccentric and wanting my peripherals color-coordinated. *shrug* :)

Cool

First:
What version of Windows do you want to install?
(I should be able to get 95,98,98SE,2000,ME,NT,XP)
{EDITOR'S NOTE: Say ME and die.)
Second:
I think I can rummage up a keyboard, let me ask around.

Third:
I've got a POC soundcard to use in the interim, but ONLY if you've got nothing else. It'll make noise...maybe.

Fourth:
I'm sooo jealous.

The keyboard needs to be black. *grin*

I use ME on my laptop just fine. It's never given me any problems. I'm interested in trying XP, though, if you can get it.

And I'd be happy to use the soundcard for now. I'm sure anything is better than onboard. :)

About MP3's:

I've got a library currently sitting at 1,403 MP3 files, and it only takes up 6.05GB. Definately worth the space, but as you can see, the space isn't that much. What kills my external are all the Star Trek TNG, Voyager, DS9, Enterprise; Andromeda, Babylon 5, and movies sitting on it. (Usually hovers around 20 GB) So...I am a firm believer in more HDD space.

As I've said, I don't believe in spending more for HDD space when I have a CD-RW :)
