Tonight I went to SCA dance practice for the first time in about three years. While I had a good time, I don't see myself going back regularly. Due to the nature of the beast, it's still the same dances taught at the lowest-common-denominator level, and that doesn't capture my interest. The social aspect is good, but doesn't make up for the lack of interest otherwise. I did see some very nice people I hadn't seen in a very long time, though, and got some hugs and scratches and rubs in good ways. Yay people.

This leaves the option now of what to do with my Wednesday nights. [livejournal.com profile] jmspencer will not be running another D&D game, and AFAIK neither will londo. SCA dance isn't enough to be my regular commitment. So what could be? I do feel like I want something regularly social on my one free weeknight.

Things I'm interested in:
  • Gaming - finding another tabletop group maybe?
  • Dancing - either finding a bellydance class that meets Wed nights, or even some other form of dance, given the ability to scale the teaching to my level
  • Music making - joining a band/orchestra/choir
  • Crafting - a knitting circle, sewing class, etc
  • Flying - but I don't have the money now to take lessons, so that's moot
  • Learning - take some form of community/adult learning course?

Any ideas? Alternately it may be possible to rework my schedule at work to make another night my early night, OR I could just scrap the idea of an early weeknight entirely and work the entire week 12-8. So, options. Many options. And probably I shouldn't be making any decisions right now anyway. But still, thinking!

In other news, I have finally read The Strange Tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] alexx_kay!

There is swing dancing at MIT on Wednesdays as well...at this point, I am very much in agreement about the SCA dance. Like the people, like dancing at events, but have no desire to do a 10 minute walk through for a two to three minute dance. Not a good ratio.

Swing dancing might be nice - honestly I'd be more interested in the MIT handbell choir, but research just led me to the fact that they've disbanded. Sad!

But you're completely right about the ratio. The fact that 80% of the evening is hearing lengthy explanations of the dances when most of the experienced people could just do it real-time with calls is cumbersome. :/

Worcester has a house, that I live in, where there will be gaming...

Do tell me more. (Though really, getting out to Worcester and back in one night is a bit rough.)

"probably I shouldn't be making any decisions right now anyway"

It might well be a good idea to postpone decisions about major life-changing commitments. What to do for fun once a week is not typically one of those. And doing *something* for fun is strongly recommended in your current circumstances.

Hm. I don't think I'm quite up to hosting a general, regular Movie Night any time soon, but if you want to come over and hang out watching DVDs from time to time, that would be seen as a Good Thing.

"In other news, I have finally read The Strange Tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and thoroughly enjoyed it."

Yay! Stevenson really holds up remarkably well. Excellent storytelling skills and perceptive insights into human nature don't go out of style. Have you read Treasure Island? (I myself need to go read more of his work at some point...

The "not making the decision" was less because of lack of ability to make good decisions, and more because in X months I won't be living here anymore, so any decisions I make based on something fun to do will suffer from a difference in commute time. That's all!

There are DVDs I know I should see that I haven't, that you have, so perhaps making a movie night or two happen wouldn't be a bad idea.

This reminds me - are you and Kes planning on going to the MIT book swap on Sunday morning? It occurs to me that we could meet up there if so, and then I could come back to Dot. with you and end up at the Buttery for games. A nice social day could be made here!

Haven't read Treasure Island, no. I wonder if I have it in digital form...

"perhaps making a movie night or two happen wouldn't be a bad idea."

Feel free to give us a call whenever. Kes and I are about 50% likely to be in a guest-welcoming mood at any arbitrary time, and we aren't shy about saying if we aren't :-)

"are you and Kes planning on going to the MIT book swap on Sunday morning?"

Not currently, though that might always change. (It may be a bit of a zoo on Sunday, and Kes and I are hardly lacking for books.)

Well this upcoming Wednesday seems to be stolen by a meeting for a LARP I plan on joining, but I might still call you up tomorrow noonish to see if you want company then.

[livejournal.com profile] elenuial is about to start up a D&D game on Wednesday nights (next week is character creation) and I feel like he mentioned an available slot. However, it's running from 6-10PM and is probably not worth your coming out just for it.

Of course, since you probably have a Linkpass, I could bring you there for free since I'd be taking the T to Riverside where my truck will be parked.

Hmm. We have an open slot in the Elemental Evil Game my friend Tom is running bi-weekly, IIRC. I think you'd be a good fit for the group.

    As in, The Temple of?

Yeah, he took Temple, and Return to Temple of Elemental Evil, and put them together with some original material to make a huge campaign. We've barely started yet.

More info - where, when, etc? I can't say I'm too certain as I'm pretty skittish about D&D groups I have never met, but I'm willing to get information.

Looking like bi-weekly Sundays at this time.

Heh... I think I'm out, then. It'll either conflict with my other biweekly Sunday game, or it'll require me to be in a game EVERY Sunday, neither of which work for me. :P

    1. Hi! It's Kelly. I go by Kylie on the Internet. But it's Kelly.
    2. My journal is, as I have realized in rereading it just now, pretty awful, at least at the moment. Somehow I don't seem to have posted about anything in the last month besides politics and Desperate Housewives (no, really... sadly...). I used to post about the toys that came out of Burger King kids' meals, at least. I'm not sure why I think that was any better, but I do.
    3. I totally love your journal title because I've come across that line ("baring soles/souls") in a couple books by Irvin Yalom, only he thinks it's a piece of incredibly meaningful symbolism, instead of a silly joke.
    4. I too am interested in finding a D&D game to play. I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons: Tiny Adventures on Facebook a lot, but that doesn't seem to be the same thing.

The journal title comes from the song "Fly" by Moxy Fruvous, but I bet several witty andor insightful people have thought of that particular pun. I really like it, though. :)

I am starting a bi-weekly Sunday afternoon D&D game with a friend of mine in Cambridge. Should I ask if there is an extra slot for you? The DM was also the DM for the first D&D campaign I ever joined a couple years back, so he's fine with newbies. And I've never played 4th Ed at all so I'll be clueless often.

If you wanted to see if there's an extra slot in the game, I'd love that! No worries if there isn't, of course, but that would be lovely if there is. I posted messages once or twice to the Boston D&D boards on meetup.com or somewhere, but nothing seemed to work out, and it's a shame, because I've been excited to try D&D for awhile. Yay!

I will ask then! I'll also give the advice that joining a random group is probably going to be bad news, just because the majority of D&D gamers are socially retarded. You wanna hook up with cool people, like me. >_>
