SCA dance practice / Wednesday nights / miscellanea
Tonight I went to SCA dance practice for the first time in about three years. While I had a good time, I don't see myself going back regularly. Due to the nature of the beast, it's still the same dances taught at the lowest-common-denominator level, and that doesn't capture my interest. The social aspect is good, but doesn't make up for the lack of interest otherwise. I did see some very nice people I hadn't seen in a very long time, though, and got some hugs and scratches and rubs in good ways. Yay people.
This leaves the option now of what to do with my Wednesday nights.
jmspencer will not be running another D&D game, and AFAIK neither will londo. SCA dance isn't enough to be my regular commitment. So what could be? I do feel like I want something regularly social on my one free weeknight.
Things I'm interested in:
Gaming - finding another tabletop group maybe?
Dancing - either finding a bellydance class that meets Wed nights, or even some other form of dance, given the ability to scale the teaching to my level
Music making - joining a band/orchestra/choir
Crafting - a knitting circle, sewing class, etc
Flying - but I don't have the money now to take lessons, so that's moot
Learning - take some form of community/adult learning course?
Any ideas? Alternately it may be possible to rework my schedule at work to make another night my early night, OR I could just scrap the idea of an early weeknight entirely and work the entire week 12-8. So, options. Many options. And probably I shouldn't be making any decisions right now anyway. But still, thinking!
In other news, I have finally read The Strange Tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks,
alexx_kay!

But you're completely right about the ratio. The fact that 80% of the evening is hearing lengthy explanations of the dances when most of the experienced people could just do it real-time with calls is cumbersome. :/

It might well be a good idea to postpone decisions about major life-changing commitments. What to do for fun once a week is not typically one of those. And doing *something* for fun is strongly recommended in your current circumstances.
Hm. I don't think I'm quite up to hosting a general, regular Movie Night any time soon, but if you want to come over and hang out watching DVDs from time to time, that would be seen as a Good Thing.

Yay! Stevenson really holds up remarkably well. Excellent storytelling skills and perceptive insights into human nature don't go out of style. Have you read Treasure Island? (I myself need to go read more of his work at some point...

There are DVDs I know I should see that I haven't, that you have, so perhaps making a movie night or two happen wouldn't be a bad idea.
This reminds me - are you and Kes planning on going to the MIT book swap on Sunday morning? It occurs to me that we could meet up there if so, and then I could come back to Dot. with you and end up at the Buttery for games. A nice social day could be made here!
Haven't read Treasure Island, no. I wonder if I have it in digital form...

Feel free to give us a call whenever. Kes and I are about 50% likely to be in a guest-welcoming mood at any arbitrary time, and we aren't shy about saying if we aren't :-)
"are you and Kes planning on going to the MIT book swap on Sunday morning?"
Not currently, though that might always change. (It may be a bit of a zoo on Sunday, and Kes and I are hardly lacking for books.)

Of course, since you probably have a Linkpass, I could bring you there for free since I'd be taking the T to Riverside where my truck will be parked.

2. My journal is, as I have realized in rereading it just now, pretty awful, at least at the moment. Somehow I don't seem to have posted about anything in the last month besides politics and Desperate Housewives (no, really... sadly...). I used to post about the toys that came out of Burger King kids' meals, at least. I'm not sure why I think that was any better, but I do.
3. I totally love your journal title because I've come across that line ("baring soles/souls") in a couple books by Irvin Yalom, only he thinks it's a piece of incredibly meaningful symbolism, instead of a silly joke.
4. I too am interested in finding a D&D game to play. I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons: Tiny Adventures on Facebook a lot, but that doesn't seem to be the same thing.

I am starting a bi-weekly Sunday afternoon D&D game with a friend of mine in Cambridge. Should I ask if there is an extra slot for you? The DM was also the DM for the first D&D campaign I ever joined a couple years back, so he's fine with newbies. And I've never played 4th Ed at all so I'll be clueless often.
