I definitely want to make it to a ren faire - pretty much any ren faire - this year. I suppose there are SCA events that could count, but they carry more of a burden associated with attending.
I'm aware I'm invited to PennRen, it's just not worked out timing-wise in the past couple of years, but it's one of the ones in my head to go to. :)
And sure, if you can think of an SCA event where I wouldn't be bitched at if I wore what *I* liked from my closet-o-garb, and where there'd be something to do or entertain me, tell me about it!
May Day springs to mind, what with it being free and local. There will be dancing and a performance by i Sebastiani, the greatest Commedia dell'Arte troupe in the Entire World*, and general hanging out and being crafty. And rosinavs is Châtelaine, so if there's anything you would want to do or see that you're not doing or seeing, let her know and it will be done.
if you can think of an SCA event where I wouldn't be bitched at
Please let us know if this happens so these people can be disciplined appropriately. It really and truly is frowned upon, but we need witnesses to come forward in order to prosecute. Conveniently, May Day is a college/recruiting event, so it should be even less likely to occur.
You know, I was in the SCA for a bit of time before you showed up. I do know who i Sebastiani, the greatest Commedia dell'Arte troupe in the Entire World, is. ;) And yes, their shows are something that are of a draw to me, being things I can't see/do elsewhere. The hanging out and being crafty, eh, it still has this stigma attached to it, that I can't bring particular things because they don't fit. It's not active bitching I've ever been the target of, or even seen. It's the passive, looking-down-nose you're-not-worth-talking-to bitching that bothers me, and simply the fact that I don't WANT that rule of what I can and can't do or talk about hindering my enjoyment of dressing up and doing things with my friends. It's not a person or persons, it's the rule of the event/society that I clash with.
Yes, I know. And I appreciate it; the feast gear you gave me is better than what I had bought myself. :)

Ah. I've conditioned myself not to notice that sort of thing.
I don't WANT that rule of what I can and can't do or talk about
There is no rule about what you can't talk about. And though that does frustrate some people that want a more immersive experience, it's their job to find ways to craft spaces for it, not ours. I try and view the SCA in the spirit of its title - if there wasn't supposed to be idiosyncrasy, it would be called "theatre", not "anachronism".
Geeks tend to create one size fits all events, for fear of violating...well, pretty much every Geek Social Fallacy. The SCA crafts more targeted events, which leaves some people (and a lot of hobbies) out. If I didn't know there would always be things for me to do (helping out, being crafty, etc.), I know I'd go to a lot fewer events.

*Yes, it's really true.
