juldea: (braid)

So, Helen is awesome. She's nice, funny, and interesting, and totally an easy hand with hair. I got a shampoo and a slight trim - about one inch due to wintertime split ends. When we talked about how I do my hair, she didn't chastize me or look at me blankly when I said I didn't part my hair. (This has happened to me before.) She listened to how I do it (very minimalist, comb out tangles and go, no styling besides the occasional braid) and went with it. My hair feels soft and nice and looks good.

The downside: $35. The internet led me to believe this salon was on the cheap side, and for me, that'd be more like $20. I think maybe a men's wash-cut is about $20? Which is a crock, but ah well. Now I know. So I loved what I got, but for that price, I want a 15-minute scalp massage, too!

Being the one who writes up the price list for my father's beauty salon, I can safely tell you that price goes up the longer the head of hair is. That's why a men's shampoo and trim may be $20 but yours might be $35. They have to use more time, product, and water to take care of you, and that all makes it a more expensive prospect.

Still, that's really a good price for a salon in the city. That's only a few dollars more than what you might get at my father's shop, and he's all the way out in Woburn.

I do believe that, about the length of hair affecting pricing; makes plenty of sense to me. The question is whether or not londo would get the same price if he went in for the same deal.

I'm still used to Oklahoma prices, I guess. This is only the second haircut I've gotten in Massachusetts!

I think it might just be inflation, though. My shampoo/cut/blowdry/style costs $35 in Norman. It's not a cheap chain place, it's the kind of place where all those extras are assumed to be part of the haircutting experience, but neither is it a fancy place. It's more of a hip place. Salon Zen, if that rings a bell. I don't remember if it was around while you were here.

I don't think I visited any salons in Norman except for the one in Campus Corner where I got my hair cut off, and I don't remember the name of it. Still, I must've gotten a good deal if it equates to one in Norman (seriously, with the cost of living differences...)

The cheapest haircut I've had in Massachusetts cost me $20 - even when I went to a barber to just have an inch or so trimmed off.

In fact, I was really happy to find a place in Auburn that does walk-ins and only costs me about $20 including tip. I've been there 3 times so far (short hair needs to be cut more often), and have been completely satisfied twice.

Hairstylists always look at me funny when I tell them my usual routine is wash, comb, and go - that's WHY I keep my hair short. I don't even own a blowdryer. This place in Auburn is actually the first one that's let me walk out with wet hair (cheaper that way, too).

Huh. I'm pretty sure I got out of the Supercuts at Central Square last year for under $20, and that was wash, trim, dry. Maybe I'm misremembering? Either way, obviously I should be more pleased with the price I got, compared to all these other stories!

The dry yesterday was included with the cost, which is the only reason I had her do it.
