Book finished! Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett.

Book started! Rather than continuing along the Discworld series (because my brain threatened to turn to goo if I did without a break), I picked up Wizard for Hire by Jim Butcher, the collection of his first three Dresden Files books. alexx_kay lent it to me a while back, and it's been sitting on my desk waiting. I finished the first book, Storm Watch, today. I like these books. They are mightily close to one of my favorite movies ever, but in the books, the main character is a smart-arsed, gritty, seen-it-all detective who DOES use magic. Hehe. Anyway, I like how I feel more like I'm reading a detective mystery than a fantasy novel, so far.

Knitting project started! Finally going to make these damned knit bunnies for my sister in law. I don't know why she needs them, but ok. Of course, they're being made pretty slowly... my hands and wrists object to a lot of knitting, these days. Can't imagine why. :P

Jim Butcher graduated from OU in the same writing program that I graduate in on Friday (Professional Writing). I feel like his success has really put some pressure on the rest of us.

Did you know Dresden Files is a TV show now?

Yeah, I knew about the TV show. I don't have cable and don't watch the TV channels I am able to get anyway, so I've not seen any of it, but people talk about it every now and then and how it relates to the books. (It was kind of weird - I had never heard of these books or the TV show, and then suddenly last year I heard about it all from three different directions at once!)

I would suggest avoiding the TV show until you've finished the (first three) books. The show isn't very true to them but it is entertaining TV anyway. Jury is still out with me on the show.

I would suggest you check out the Codex Alera, too. It's Butcher's fantasy series. Good Stuff.

Dresden doesn't count as fantasty? Wizards, werewolves, etc? :)

As I said, I don't have much ability to see the show, so it's not much of an issue. Unless someone wants to loan me DVDs...

High Fantasy vs. Urban Fantasy. Or, as Butcher describes it in an Author's Note somewhere "Swords and Ponies". (Haven't read the books myself, so I don't have an opinion on their quality.)

Another Dresden Files convert. Excellent. Cast A Deadly Spell? That's one of my favorites also. I have that on VHS somewhere. You know there was a sequel to that right? I don't know how good it is, but I'm curious to find out.

Yeah, I knew about the sequel, but haven't seen it. (also, I have TWO copies on VHS of the original, although one of them has gone missing at londo's mom's house, a feat which I am very sad about because I specifically bought the second copy to replace my worn 10-year-old copy so that I could send out the old copy to people to introduce them to it)

If you get your hands on a ocpy of the sequel, I'd be interested in seeing it. I kind of assume it's crap, though.

G!G! is the first Pratchett I ever read. And you're totally right - unlike other authors, you can't read too many of his books without taking a break in between. :)

Also, I found the Rick Cook books (Wizard's Bane, The Wizardry Compiled, Wizardry Cursed, and Wizardry Consulted, aka "Wiz Biz") - I'll try to make sure they don't get packed up, so you and londo can borrow them.
