jobs - HELP!!
14 March 2007 16:26I need HELP!! from my wiser, more experienced friends.
So my end goal with employment right now is to reduce my debt and finance pilot training. Getting a job IN aviation would be the best, of course, but if that is not possible, anything that (A) I don't hate and (B) pays me well enough should do the trick.
A few months ago, when I determined this was the course I wanted to take, I shot off emailed letters of intrest and resumes to all of the flight schools, support services, etc at Hanscom. This led to the interviewing and ALMOST position at Linear Air, which fizzled because they were moving someplace I couldn't get to via public transit. With no more leads visible, I started searching Craigslist for non-aviation positions. I found an ad for a non-profit women's shelter in Central Square - 5-10 minutes walk from home! - that desperately needed an admin assistant with MS Access experience. Well, here I am. I applied.
Last week I went there for an initial interview with the interim director. She liked me and told me I was definitely going to be asked back for a second interview. While waiting for that to be scheduled, I continued browsing Craigslist. On Monday, I found a job posting from a flight school at Hanscom! I immediately sent off a cover letter email with resume and expressed my high levels of interest. I received an email back asking what exactly my flight experience was, and responded with a detailed answer. I was told they would be in touch.
The second interview with the shelter happened this morning. It went well, and about an hour ago while I was here at my temp job at Harvard, my supervisor was called to provide a reference for me, which she did right here in front of me. (Yes, it was good. Hehe.) Soon afterwards my cell phone rang. It was the shelter. Anticipating the problem I'm now having, I let it go to voicemail. The voicemail says that she wants to talk to me about the position and to call back soon.
I am 98% sure they are going to ask to hire me. Unfortunately, I don't want to accept a position there if I could work at the flight school instead. What do I tell them? I would just say, "I'm waiting to hear back from another company, can I get back to you in a week?" but for two issues. First off, the shelter is trying to hire someone very quickly as they are on a deadline. Secondly, I don't know how quickly the flight school is going to operate; they could call me tomorrow or not until next week, so a week might not be enough time to tell the shelter whether or not I will accept.
So, intelligent worldly people, what do I do now?
