My Ikea Adventure
10 January 2006 06:32Blah. Why is it that when I go to bed at 9-10pm, I have an incredibly hard time waking up in the morning, but when I go to bed at 11:30pm, I pop out of bed at 5:30 just fine? Oh well, gives me opportunity to tell you about my Ikea trip.
Yeah, I caved, and went to Ikea for a couple of hours on Sunday morning.
The Zipcar parking spots aren't quite directly in front, but they are closer than most any other spots except for Handicapped and "Family Parking" (for people with small children and strollers, it seems. One way to keep down parking lot accidents involving kids...)
Their breakfast plate was absolutely a steal at $.99 and I ate every bit of it - this being notable because normally I can't stand it when other people make scrambled eggs, but these were done well. Oh, and I had lingenberry juice. Yum.
I went with one major, one minor, and one back-of-the-head project to look at furniture for. The first being bookcase storage for my apartment, the second being some sort of storage unit to put atop my dresser for better organization, and the third being conveninent yarn storage. The latter was the easiest solved, the moment I saw these being advertised for storing stuffed animals. Now I just have to figure out where to hang it...
Bookshelves not made by hand continue to be too deep. I need mass paperback storage, not Encyclopedia Brittanica! Perhaps I should just attempt to acquire one of these from a library somewhere. Or get one of those handy folk I know to take a commission on some shallow bookshelves. :)
Deep shelving, however, is pretty much what I was looking for to place atop my dresser for more bedroom storage space. Hence, I looked for some kind of hutch or shelving unit that was short and wide, and luckily those were pretty prevalent. I'm picky, but I did end up finding something I thought was perfect. A 3' tall, 4.5' wide 'bookcase' with one non-adjustable and two adjustable shelves on each side. It was displayed atop a TV stand, but there was only one tag for both items, and it said that the combination was "oversold." Not wanting to miss out, I questioned about it. Sadly, the employee I asked looked it up and saw that yes, the item was out of stock, AND it was being discontinued so they wouldn't be receiving any more. Sigh. I was sad.
...then he mentioned he could sell me the display unit. I blinked a lot, doing fast mental calculations as to how much londo would hate me if I came back with a fully-assembled piece of furniture for him to haul into the house - not to mention the fact I wasn't planning on spending more than $10 there that day. Then I was informed that the item would be taken downstairs to the "As-Is Department" to be discounted due to use. Whee! Price reduction! That sold me. Hee. A guy with a cart came up to remove my unit from the display, I followed him down to the As-Is department (which is a great place to get things with minor and major scrapes and scratches for cheap!!), and found out I got 31% off. I left the store spending under $50, total. (Side note: I assume that the reason I can't find any pictures of this shelf unit is due to the discontinuation of the product. However, you can get the general idea here, just shorter and wider with two columns of shelves.
I still had to deal with telling londo I needed his help getting something into the house, and his requisite frowning and muttering that he shouldn't have let me go on this trip alone. I think I managed to appeal to his frugal sensibilities with my story of why, exactly, I had to buy this item today. Heh. So now there's storage above my dresser that's mostly organized - yay!! Sometime I need to tackle the living room and figure out how I want to hang this yarn ... thing.
One last thing for those who have stuck around this long: I really fell in love with this for random wall storage. So cute! I couldn't justify bringing home anything else random, though.
All in all, I am not insane about the store like some people are, but it was a pretty neat place. I'll definitely go again with
tpau when she gets back from London. But... perhaps not on a Sunday morning. It was pretty crowded.
Woo. Time to go get ready for work.

on 10 Jan 2006 15:13 (UTC)I was gonna give you the link to Boston Wood (who might have the shallow bookshelves you want) but their account is suspended. They are on Comm Ave, near Packard's Corner if you end up in Allston for some strange reason.
