Very weird story about my memory:
Every now and then, I remember a song I know I heard during high school on the Dr. Demento Show, which I listened to religiously: "If I Can't Go To Manhattan, Bring a Manhattan To Me." I can sing the chorus word- and pitch-perfect, at least in relation to my memory, and the memory is STRONG. I've looked for the song on file sharing services and had no luck, although googling finds me the name of the artist easily - Mr Elk and Mr Seal, they're called. It never grabbed me to look beyond that...
But I was talking to someone online recently who apparently loves challenges like hard songs to find, so I gave him that one. Now, a day later, he is sharing what he has found: that song has apparently only ever been played on the Dr. Demento show once. EVER. (The Dr. D official site points to the unofficial rec.arts.dementia site with a playlist search.) It was on the show played on January 17, 1993.
I am confused. I am not certain that I listened to Dr. D in 7th grade. Let's see... I lived in Louisiana... went to Cope Middle School... It's feasible, but I really remember listening to Dr. D the most in California, during the 8th or 9th grade. Perhaps it was a rerun of that particular show? Either way, it's not likely that I heard the song more than once, which makes it REALLY interesting that my memory of it is so strong.
I have a line on downloading it now, on a site (http://www.TheMadMusicArchive.com/) that hosts rotating segments of Dr. Demento shows for download. By permission, too! The segment of that show containing my song should be available on the 1st of the month when the segments rotate. *crosses fingers*
