Still reading Trinity. It's really appalling the killing and other atrocities done in the name of god.

Even if you can point and say, "That was them, they were mistaken, they totally did religion the wrong way," I have never heard of someone killing another human being "for atheism."[1]

I can't think of a better reason to be an atheist.

[1] Feel free to provide examples if you have them.

Would you like me to poll the millions killed by "Christians" for being non-Christian in the past 2000 years and find out how many of them were atheists in specific? That'd be pretty hard. There's too many people to look up.

I am really hesitant to bring up this point as it'll foster some bad feelings, I know, but history is written by the winners. Christians have been winning for quite a while now. Of course their martyrs are going to be talked about everywhere, while those killed for other reasons in less-populated groups aren't going to get as much publicity.

That being said:

Socrates
Thomas Aikenhead (http://www.uua.org/uuhs/duub/articles/thomasaikenhead.html)
Denis Diderot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Diderot)
Giordano Bruno (http://www.infidels.org/library/historical/john_kessler/giordano_bruno.html)
Madalyn Murray O'Hair (http://www.who2.com/madalynmurrayohair.html)
Death is the punishment for atheism under Shari'a law; I don't know how many people each year die for it.

That's a quick list.
