Still reading Trinity. It's really appalling the killing and other atrocities done in the name of god.

Even if you can point and say, "That was them, they were mistaken, they totally did religion the wrong way," I have never heard of someone killing another human being "for atheism."[1]

I can't think of a better reason to be an atheist.

[1] Feel free to provide examples if you have them.

depends on where you are. i ahve yet to be ANYWHERE where atheism is not at least 50% of the population (or at least the outspoken population). i _think_ but i could be wrong, that agnosticism is mroe prominent then atheism, but as someone who does have religion, i CONSTANTLY feel in the minority (and nto just because my actual religion happens to be the monority one)

That's 'cause you hang out with geeks, tpau. Geeks tend to be atheist... but as on a societal level (not Societal! hehe) atheists are totally not 50% of the population. I don't know numbers though.

So was I. ;)

Shrug, my opinions are colored from living in America, where something like 80% of the people are Christian. And I was raised Christian. So... :)

I suspect that may have something to do with our age. It hasn't been "cool" to be religious for... a couple decades at least. It is "cool" to say "I don't believe in a god, any god." And high school (whihc we're not that far removed form) is a time where people test boundries and I think a lot of people question thier faith at that point.

I have said before that I am reluctant to say "well, yes, I'm Christina" because of the asshole factor. Many people are reluctant to discuss thier faith at all, because they feel a) they'll be ridiculed for it, or b) they just don't think it's anyone else's business. So I think your "outspoken population" observation is probably right.

Dude, where have you lived where it's cool to not believe in god? Because it's NOT where I've lived...

Good point... but you grew up in the Bible Belt... or just south of it. I grew up in a big city, and [livejournal.com profile] tpau grew up first in a country with no religion, and then in New York City/suburbs of... about as far away from the Bible Belt as you can get.

I went to two years of high school, and all of college, in the Bible Belt. That's not growing up.

I "grew up" in California, Hawaii, and Louisiana. The last counts as South and therefore pretty Bible-heavy, but CA and HI are pretty liberal states...
