There's a new Pope (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany = Pope Benedict XVI, aka "Pope Joe.") He's ultra-conservative, and there's a bunch of controversy about his appointment. Whee.

And no, I'm not Catholic. I just keep up with the news.

Something I've never understood,and am slightly curious about....How do the names get chosen? The Benedict,John Paul,Pious stuff?

He chooses it himself--it is the first question he is asked after he accepts his election.

Not all have used something other than their given name, most look back to previous popes for inspiration and symbolism John Paul I and II, of course, did that.
