Heh. I remember last year when I wandered around wondering why so many people had smudges on their foreheads.

I know a little bit more about Catholicism now. Not a lot... but enough. ;)

Don't feel bad ;) I married into a family that I had to become catholic to actually use the church - and well lets just say I've said a few things the past few weeks that have gotten me in a lot of trouble because honestly it's been almost 5 years and I still no nothing about it, or so it seems. :P

Grew up in: Arkansas, California (mid), Hawaii, Louisiana, California (northern), Oklahoma

Just not high concentrations of Catholics, I guess.

I grew up in Oklahoma and Texas (and still live here), and I can honestly say I've never seen an Ash Wednesday smudge in my whole life.

Yeah, in California, I saw no smudges. I come to Boston, and there are smudges EVERYWHERE. It's really interesting.

There are 2 immigrant groups primarily responsible for Catholicism in America: Italians (the North End, Little Italy) and Irish (Southie, pretty much all of NYC). So yeah, Boston, New York, Northeast in general, lotsa "crosses" in those areas.

I know I don't see them around here and there at least two Catholics in my department. Maybe it's a regional thing.

I used to rub mine off and get scolded by the catholic nuns.

I'm with sleek, go get smudged, wash it off, and when small get knuckles slapped by ruler wielding nuns, that's how Ash Wednesday tends to go

I grew up in a very Catholic neighboorhood, but I never saw it much growing up. I think the people who I regularly saw (school-age friends and adult neighbors) weren't very religious.
