So, I went to Birka. It was pretty cool.

I wore my new, uh... my new garb. I can't classify it by time period or place because I don't know what they are! ;) But it's a long green dress with a shorter overdress in black, with this trim on the hems (neck, sleeves, bottom). [livejournal.com profile] tpau was the inspiration and assistance in making it. With the black belt [livejournal.com profile] rufinia gave me, I was lookin' nice. Yay for new garb.

I brought along [livejournal.com profile] londo for the sole purpose of the sushi run. He, amazingly, had a good time. I expected him to hate the whole day... but he consented to throw on a tunic of [livejournal.com profile] learnedax's, and ended up sitting at the Information booth for several hours answering people's questions! He even answered the, "What's this all about?" question several times, amusing considering he's into it even less than I am. Hehe. Oh, and he was reading Dune there at the table, which is also amusing. Talk about anachronism. ;)

There was shopping. I got: feast gear (finally), a belt pouch and a better button for it, yarn for [livejournal.com profile] londo's klein bottle hat, a bellydance unitard (it looks like pants and a crop tank, but really it has a mesh panel in the middle - mine is black with black mesh, so it's more obvious that it's one piece. I'll take a picture... I tried it on for [livejournal.com profile] londo and it got results so apparently it's good!), and a snood. Whee, money.

Court was actually fun and enjoyable, not boring like I thought it'd be. Well, there were unfun parts, but they were mostly due to the idiots in the row behind us. :P But there were lots of pretty things to look at, awesome people who spoke, lots of jokes and tomfoolery (and [livejournal.com profile] cristovau!), and I worked on the Rogue throughout it all so I was able to keep from getting bored during the slow parts. Yay.

Still don't know what I want for a persona. I like my bias dress, I like my new garb, and [livejournal.com profile] rufinia has offered/threatened to make me some Byzantine! So far she's shown me this which I like a lot. I have no clue how to turn that into an actual garment, but she does and that's what's important. Yay!

Got to know Marian-o-the-Buttery better, and she's neat.

SCA things I'm interested in trying out: heralding (the person who speaks loudly during court), archery, fencing, making snoods and other knitting endeavors...

londo

Can you poke him? He still owes me a resume and a work sample.

I know he's working on something that involves the word 'wiki' but he needs to install XP on his machine for some reason. Also, he is probably currently still in my bed, dying. Well, ill. This morning he sounded horrible, he's all congested. Add to all of this that last night he accidentally spilled boiling water on two of his fingers and have kept them in cold water or under an ice pack for most of the past day... *sigh*

But yes, I'll find out what's up from him when I talk to him next.

I think you experienced court properly, with seats close enough to hear the presentations and crafty-type stuff for your hands. That helps a lot.

Birka is the SCA version of a mall. It's pretty accessible. I'm glad you and [livejournal.com profile] londo had a good time. Did you go down to the ball at all?

Oh yeah, don't sweat the persona/garb thing. Many of your SCA friends have wardrobes that stretch across a millenia and a few continental land masses. I'm just surprised that you haven't felt the urge and gone whole hog middle-eastern (though that would have been cold at Birka).

Yeah, being able to mostly hear what the King and Queen were saying and not just the heralds was very nice.

[livejournal.com profile] londo referred to it as "SCA lite," which I agree with. Heh. Nope, during the ball we were eating sushi and back in mundane clothes.

I haven't gone whole-hog middle-eastern because I'm into CABARET, with lots of glitz and glitter and sequins and jewels and that's very very modern. It seems, and it could just be because I haven't found the right people, that the only middle-eastern I see at SCA events is very earthy tribal style, which isn't my thing. If someone can show me a glitzy glamorous period style, I would be all over it.

Neither of those first links look like something I saw this weekend. Then again, I think I'm really bad at looking at a picture - especially old pictures - and turning it into a modern-day equivalent.

That third link would've probably been really helpful if 90% of the links weren't broken.

Yeah, the cabaret is harder to justify to garb snobs, which doesn't mean it's not done quite a bit. Pennsic is full of I Dream of Jeanies. Most people doing heavy garb work move towards tribal and turkish coats. (Turkish fashion has better documentation)

Glitzy, glamorous and period... you met Lakshmi, right?

We exchanged a few words, but londo was in a rush to leave so we didn't get beyond much. I was kind of confused by her duck-patterned top.

Yeah, ducks. It's the A in SCA. Sorta like my viking hat.
The garb is Indian not middle-eastern. She does her homework.
And she gets the glitz and glamour thing.
