Bowlderizing works is nothing new, but these guys are turning it into a business. (They aren't the only ones, just the biggest, if I recall correctly.)

There's a lawsuit against them wending it's way through a mass of intellectual property law and assorted U.S. district courts. Not sure what the status is these days, though.

It's yet another case of the technology making something possible that might not square with intellectual property law. Now, CleanFlicks filed the first lawsuit against the Directors Guild of America when it was making public protests over their bowlderization practices. The DGA countersued, of course, both sides wanting copyright law to be clarified for that kind of activity. Several studios also sued based on trademark infringement by renting or selling an altered version of their movie as the original. In the meantime, the House Judiciary Committee has approved a bill called the "Family Movie Act" to keep businesses like CleanFlicks from being sued for what they do. (After all, when has the House ever wanted to vote against anything that might be construed as promoting sex and violence. Or sex, anyway.) One relatively recent article. (Oddly, I can't find anything about the results of the District Court hearing or the current status of the case. My Google-fu is failing me. :-()

Regarding Bowdler: One of my favorite anecdotes about Lewis Carroll and his... odd sexual ideas involves Bowdler. Rather late in his life, discussing various projects he intended to undertake, if he lived long enough (emphasis mine):

Wow,that's absurd.
People that don't like to see sex,violence,etc have no freakin business watchin shit like Kill Bill and Hannibal any damn ways.
That's what G and PG is for!
How do they edit them?Do they actually remove the scenes?Or just blur out the boobies,or have voices that don't match whatsoever fill in words that don't make sense in the sentence....
