Wow, that seemed to go a lot faster than the scarf. But isn't it harder to make a hat? (Since it's not just a big rectangle?)

Nope... you get these neat things called circular needles (picture (http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall03/images/circ_untwist.jpg)) that let you knit around and around in a spiral forever. So I did that for about 6-7 inches, then started decreasing by 6 stitches every 'time around (the original circle was 72 stitches around) so that the top eventually gathered together. It went VERY quickly. I did it in, like, two days.

Also, I am more familiar with knitting now, so things went faster.

Okay, how do you:

1) decide how many stitches comprise your starting circumference?

2) connect the spiral to itself?

1) I took the yarn I had and made a 20 stitch by 6 row rectangle, measured it, measured around my head, and then did some math. :)

It's one circular needle - which is created by taking two straight needles and joining their back ends with a flexible plastic cord. :)
