Read or nap... read or nap...?!

(For the record, I slept in late and didn't make lunch, figuring I'd just get money from the ATM and buy something at the cafe... and then I found I'd left my wallet at home.)

(Just because I slept in doesn't mean I feel rested.)

(The book is the ever-awesome Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins.)

I'll let you know the outcome in about an hour.

Nope, that's the only one of his novels (according to this page (http://www.rain.org/~da5e/trbib.html#novels) that I haven't read yet!

It'd be a tie between Jitterbug Perfume and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (but don't watch the movie).

saturday i'm browsing at the library, and i see a random book with skinny legs in the title, i take it down and say hmm, interesting. a book about skinny legs. i have skinny legs. but i put it back. that night i'm with some friends and they mention it as being really good. i think, that's funny, i just saw that book at the library today. and now it's on lj?

I like him, too, but I don't think there's a relation.

Robbins

I had a hard time reading Robbins. His cleverness interrupts my enjoyment of the story he is trying to tell, which would be good if he wasn't littering the narrative with neon signs declaring wit. It's probably just me, but in Jitterbug he crossed a weird self-referential line and I was forcibly thrown out of the story several times because of it. It's a pity too, because I enjoyed the basic story and many of the descriptive passages.

Interesting. Did you try to read it in long or short sessions? And do you know yourself to be a slow, medium, or fast reader?

I took the first 100-ish pages in a big quick gulp one afternoon, but got annoyed and read the rest in spurts which made the annoyances more bearable.

And do you know yourself to be a slow, medium, or fast reader?
That depends on what I'm reading. I turn down the speed for analysis. For this book I slowed down quite a bit. I liked his writing tricks and style choices, but they became distracting and that annoyed me.

At the time I was reading this, The Bell Jar and something by Garrison Keiler. It was a weird mix of styles to switch from.
