in Oklahoma
11 April 2004 11:24Well, here I am in Oklahoma.
I'm at my brother's house in Tinker. He and his wife are at Easter mass. When they get back we're going to head up to Bartlesville, where all the action is. It's about a 2.5 hour drive.
I was able to get here easily, and in fact a few awesome things happened on the way. It's cheaper to fly out of Providence than Boston, and before all of this I had plans to go to Providence with
londo for Easter, so things meshed. He and I went to Providence yesterday morning early by bus. His mom and his cousin, six years old, picked us up. If you read my journal regularly, you know that I'm generally not a fan of children. His cousin, however, was awesome on toast. A few highlights:
She randomly drew a picture of me on the back of her placemat at breakfast, using a purple magic marker
She asked londo's mom if we could stop by the library on the way home, because she had just finished doing a project but wanted to research more. I don't know many 26 year olds with that much enthusiasm about learning!
As we were leaving the library, she held up a crafts book (something with a title like Fun Crafts for Girls! and asked me if I wanted to read it in the backseat with her. Of course I did. So we looked at it together, and while doing so, she very matter-of-factly told me that "we three girls" (londo's mom being the third) should go out sometime just "to get to know each other better." I had a hard time keeping a straight face when I told her that would be great. I wasn't about to laugh, though - I was simply about to turn to londo and gush to him about how awesome his cousin was. Heh.
Anyway, we got back to londo's mom's house, and there I met the other cousin! She is littler, about 3 I think, and as cute as a button. She's not very talkative yet but we played on some drums and I swung her around some and there was much horsing around done. By the way, londo can successfully beat all three of us girls at arm wrestling UNLESS it's six hands to one.
Eventually the girls had to leave, and to use up the remaining time before my flight left, londo and I watched The Tao of Steve. I liked it; unfortunately it also seems to have left me kind of insecure. I know I'm the kind of girl that can be hooked by the Steve method...
So yeah, airport -> plane -> Cincinnati for connection. I slept on that entire flight. During boarding at Cincinnati, I went past the ticket office, then down a hallway. These were all small prop planes, so passengers would just exit through the correct door and walk on the tarmac to get to the plane. I opened the door to outside, and there was a guy talking to someone with an airport badge, who was saying things we're ready yet and to go back inside. The guy turned around...
...and it was
la2il2ok (Tim Russin)!!! We both blinked for a minute, and then rushed each other and I got a big swinging hug. Tim was a very very good friend of mine from OU. He was returning from interviewing at UConn for grad school and his previous flight had been bumped, so he was assigned to mine! It was so awesome. We sat next to each other on the way back and talked the whole time, catching up. He looks great and, like I said, might be going to UConn for grad school. That's just a couple of hours from Boston!
We parted ways at the airport when my brother and his wife picked me up. They took me to their house and we snacked and watched Silence of the Lambs, and then I slept.
So, yeah. Today will involve lots of family members and hugs. But right now, while I'm here alone, I am going to take a shower and then play my piano for as long as I possibly can.
