people from other schools always ask that - it's weird, i figured more places would do it. it means you withdrew from the class.

Basically, leave the class voluntarily, when you realize you aren't going to pass it. There's only so much time given during which you can withdraw. Early in that semester I figured out I didn't have the time for that class (which started at 8 or 9am) so I withdrew. Later, after it was too late in the semester to withdraw from any of the others, the rest of the world collapsed such that I got an F in everything else.

Aaaand, what's a U, and an I, and all those other grades that don't match the first 5 or 6 letters of the alphabet?

U = unsatisfactory. Those two Us are for crappy freshman honors courses that one had to take if you wanted to have the possibility to graduate with honors... they were basically service courses, and you had two tries to take one and pass it. I really hated them, and Us don't affect one's GPA, so...

Alternately, S = satisfactory. The S I have is for a 2-hour Pilates elective. Kind of hard to grade an exercise course A-F.

I = incomplete. You have a year to make up the class and replace the grade with a letter grade.
