I've done it. I've played D&D. And I had a blast. :)
Setup: Randy, the artist of Something Positive, decided that his fans were a good group of people to hit up for roleplaying. He was correct. Several people were interested, so a couple groups were set up this weekend to play little one-shot gaming sessions. I saw an opportunity to get my first rp experience in a group of creative people who were not all known to me (and not all super-experienced and intimidating), so of course I joined up. I played in the Saturday game. :)
The game was held at
karlean7's house. I brought along
londo, and the pretty-much-unknown-to-me
breathingfire played as well. Randy (
kobold) was the DM, of course. We were playing 3.5. I created a half-elf ranger. I had a really bad dice roll for my hp and ended up with only 28. :( This proved unfortunate later in the game, as I'm sure you can guess.
Character creation took about 2 hours for the four of us, considering there were only two players' guides to share around, and two of us were newbies. I did have a bit more clue than
breathingfire, but that was just on the meanings and definitions of things - I still didn't know how to calculate what, etc.
We, of course, began our campaign in a tavern. It was wonderfully cliche (and we were all aware of it). Happily Randy gave us an actual reason to begin to pay attention to each other, though, we weren't just expected to randomly notice that elf bard in the corner. Getting things started was still a bit slow, but I would imagine it always is...? Getting serious took a lot more effort, however. I got fairly frustrated with disorder. (Side note: both in rping and in my life as it relates to this group, I find myself stepping up to take charge of things more often than normal. I don't get it, but sure!)
We got a fairly simple go-to-temple-get-item quest. I would've liked more background - motivation for our characters to do this, knowledge of the item, rich environment, etc - but I realize that's high standards for a one-shot game with people who might not care to ever play again. Heh.
I really enjoyed the role-playing part of the game. I liked talking in character, although sometimes it felt like pulling teeth in order to do so. I actually got disgruntled when one person said, "My character says..." instead of just saying it. ;) I suppose this gives hope to those who want me to LARP, and it certainly soothes my fears of it somewhat. :)
Back to the game - the fun battle which nearly killed everyone involved a ballista, a few skeletons, some undead, and a corrupted ent that kicked our asses. I got picked up and thrown into
londo's barbarian at one point, and later I had a bear thrown at me. A bear. It hurt. However, that wasn't nearly as bad as
karlean7 and
breathingfire taking a ballista to the face.
karlean7 had to be ressurected after the game using the most handy part of his body later found - his feet.
londo went all crazy barbarian on the ent and managed to kill it - only to himself nearly die by the acid splashback. As it is, his charisma is now FOUR due to the effects of said splashback. ;)
To add to the fun, Randy made Godiva liqueur chocolate cheesecake for the group. Moan.
So, yes. My first gaming experience r0x0red. I hope to do it more in the future. :)
