So I finally went downtown and saw Return of the King today. There were many awesome parts, but somehow I am left with an overall feeling that is not awesome. I mean yeah, it's great, but not mindblowing spectacular.

That could have to do with the fact that the fire alarm went off in the theater right at the height of the Minas Tirith battle (when Eowyn defends her uncle), the movie was delayed for about 20 minutes, and they didn't give any warning as to when it'd come back on so I missed some random amount of time in the midst of the movie (I came back when Merry found Pippin.. or vice versa... on the battle field). Grr.

I didn't think I was going to cry until the newly-crowned Aragorn looked up at Gandalf and smiled. I lost it then.

Faramir and Eowyn standing next to each other during the coronation gives me hope that their relationship will be explored in the extended edition.

Shelob rocked my socks.

You musn't forget Pippin and Aragorn singing. That's what made me love the movie far more than the other ones. I mean...they sang!

Also, I thought the credits were really well done. Nice, "drawings" of all the cast members, good music, and everything. I mean, yes, the ending lasted, what, 30 minutes? But still. Also, Sam was cute as all hell when he was all cleaned up (I'm REALLY ignoring the total non sequitor that is his relationship with Rosie, cute as she was).

It wasn't MINDBLOWINGLY spectacular, but I find myself wanting to see it again, and I've already seen it twice.

Yes, the singing was quite awesome. I'm particularly impressed with Aragorn's, but then again... it's VIGGO!!!

The credits rocked. I sat through all of them.... and still wasn't the last person out of the theater.

Cool but a few problems

It was cool but what is with Gandalf only casting two spells? What a crappy wizard. As for saruman... He is all powerful in the dark arts but gets sent to this room (Lock in a tower) That was kind of lame. But the movie as a whole was pretty kick ass. The coronation scene was pretty but the whole shire went on to long. Just my 1.5 cents.

On the off chance that this is sincere, and not a troll: read the book. Both Gandalf and Saruman cast *way* more spells in the movie than they do in the book.

The movie is not the book. What's wrong with thinking Gandalf should have cast more spells?

I have no clue who this person is, so I can't make a sincere/troll judgement. Just so you know.

Shelob? Shelob didn't rock my socks. Shelob made me need a new pair of underwear.

Which was nothing compared to one of the people I went with. Poor guy, he's arachnophobic and I "forgot" to mention the giant spider scene. He spent most of the scene curled in a small ball in the seat.

I love and totally agree with your Shelob analysis.

I was still in the throes of postpartum hormones when I saw it, but I started crying when Pippin and Merry were separated and literally did not stop until I was on my way home. Tears going drip, drip, drip until I thought for sure I'd run out.

I think it's sweeter because they're *not* in love. ;)

So, since you've only just seen it you're just barely not stupid?

You didn't miss much between the Eowyn fight and the battlefield reunion. Unless you missed the actual Witch King slaying, in which case... you still didn't miss all that much.

I have never claimed to be more than just barely not stupid. ;)
Well wait, yes I have. Hrm.

Yes, I missed the actual Witch King slaying. As "not that much" as you may say it is, seeing it is still preferable to not.

I saw it three times. I cried every time. I think if I ever watch that movie without crying, I will know I am dead on the inside.

I only saw it once, but I'm very close to being able to say the same thing.
