Not all of the positions in your rant seemed horrible to be part of... And many of the bad things people seemed to be doing could be for reasons of oversight, not stupidity or vice.
Only Carly and one fan (who paid $50,000 for the right to know through a celebrity auction) know who it's really about. There's a whole page for it on her site, located here (http://www.carlysimon.com/vain/vain.html).
Possibilities are Beatty and Jagger, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and Kris Kristofferson. Probably others, too, but these men are listed on the site as ex-beaus.
Nor is Kris Kristofferson. Carly has given a couple hints. The first hint (allowed by the CNN guy who one the auction for the knowledge) was the name conatins an E. Her second hint she gave in another interview is the name also contains an A. (thus eliminating Kris Kristofferson) Her third hint came with an interview with Regis Philben which she added that the name contains the letter R (in honor of Regis). So there goes Cat Stevens.
