Yes folks, I don't live under a rock, I know that "riding the short bus" is generally used to imply someone is stupid/retarded. Since in most cases handicapped busses are shorter than regular busses, and [sarcasm] of course handicapped people are stupider than regular people. [/sarcasm]

I'm actually kind of insulted that some of you didn't think I knew that, but I'm weird like that. Please assume I have knowledge unless I say otherwise :P

Didn't mean to be insulting or anything, I was just a bit befuddled by the usage. Sorry...

I figured you knew what it meant. It would be totally weird for you to just magically come up with the phrase on your own.

The last line you wrote confuses me, though. How will you know you don't know, to say otherwise?

Well, to be fair (if there's any fairness at all in the use of that phrase), the non-handicapped retarded kids from my school district rode the short bus too. I always figure dit was so they didn't get picked on, riding the regular bus.

When I was in elementary school, I lived way north of my town in the middle of nowhere. Several other kids lived on the same road as me, so the school had a bus that came to get the country kids. There weren't many of us, so it was a shorter bus. I'm sure there were other short buses that went to other extreme areas to pick up farm kids. Anyway, to make a short story long, I rode a short bus to school. :-)

Well, I remember at least one guy riding on the bus with the wheelchair kid at high school. He was in the Special Ed classes, but he wasn't disabled so far as I could tell. Walked a little funny, but that's it. I just assumed he rode the short bus because he would get made fun of on the regular bus.

Now I feel bad. I guess I'll just have to ride the short bus by myself until I feel better.
