DDR, Satan's game... oh, and baseball

I don't think many of you also read dayeaux's journal, but I wanted to pass it on that one of the RAs at her religious (Wesleyan) college (university?) didn't want DDR played in the dorms because it was sinful. *blink*

In other news - I have decided to renew my interest in baseball. The Boston Red Sox have made it into the playoffs, and the excitement around town is catching. I just finished watching game 1 of the playoffs, vs. the Oakland A's, who won in the 12th inning with a bunt. One of the best game endings I've ever seen, but then again I don't watch many games. Anyway, the Sox and the Yankees are in the playoffs, making for a possibly super intense World Series. The rivalry between those two teams (Boston and New York) is rooted in 64 years of pain for the Sox. The Curse of the Bambino... To be reversed this year. Hopefully. :)

That last link really is a good one to go to, but be warned it's a large picture. It's a road sign here in Boston on Storrow Drive, a very trafficy street. When I came here last year I didn't know what the graffiti meant, and assumed the sign would be repainted eventually. Now I know what it means, and the sign will NEVER come down - it's been that way for over 10 years! The transportation department does try to repaint it, but it's fixed in just a few days. It's a cultural landmark - posters of the sign are sold in stores, even! Bostonians are crazy about their Sox.

I'm thinking about going to Fenway for game 3 (Saturday, 7:35pm) - I won't be able to get into the actual game even if I could afford it, but I can go to a bar or restaurant nearby that is decent (i.e. more food, less alcohol) and get swept up in the excitement of the game with other fans. That kind of thing appeals to me. :)

In the "Lifestyle Agreement" we sign to go to IWU, there is a section which states that we will not participate in "social dancing." Dancing a weddings is allowed though (so suddenly because you're liquored up in tuxes its ok to bump and grind?).

Most administration I have talked to label "social dancing" as dancing in very close proximity with members of the opposite sex. My RD has watched us play DDR with no qualms. I see DDR as the "choreographed movement" closer to marching band than dancing, and therefore in the parameters of my lifestyle agreement. At school-sanctioned events we've done choreographed dances for skits, talent competitions, and musicals, etc (plus doing the "hokey-pokey" at roller skate nights). Scripture's RD is just a friggin Nazi moron who's one step away from Amish. As for the personal vendetta, I don't have an explination.

And I also find it great that these same people go play Halo every night. So killing is ok but not physical activity. *rolls eyes* (I don't really have anything against Halo, its just the message they're sending.)

Right. DDR is about stepping to a specifically defined choreography (one you might not know yet!). Even if you are playing the game with other people, the closest interaction you get is being on separate dance pads and playing against each other.

My strongest argument, however, is the fact that I play DDR for hours at a time by myself. It is no more a social activity than any other video game with both single and multiplayer modes. Bah.

Heh, Boston gets really crazy about the Red Sox. It would be nice to see them get a leg up (I am tired of hearing about the Curse). I just hope we don't go into car-flipping mode, which is funny to see on the news, but not so funny when it happens in front of you. ;)

Drunken sports fan flipping over cars. A bunch of them get on one side, grab car, lift, instant flippage. Causes lots of damage. The police love these guys (and girls I guess, too), let me tell you. When the Patriots win a big game (or lose, I don't think they really care that much) I've seen places like Huntington Ave. turn into a war-zone.
