DAVENPORT, Iowa -- An anonymous person who has dropped valuable gold coins in bell ringers' buckets in eastern Iowa for the past six years has kept up the tradition this holiday season.
The Quad-City Chapter of the Salvation Army refers to the coin giver as "The Phantom."
The coins are typically wrapped in a $1 bill and discreetly dropped in the bucket without the bell ringer knowing who made the donation.
The Salvation Army's Major Mike Fletcher estimates the amount "The Phantom" has given to the Quad-City chapter over the years is in the thousands of dollars.
He said that the gold coin given last week can fetch up to $200.
