So, to tell you more about what happens without giving it all away... Let's see. River, it turns out, was observed by some top-ranking military officials when she was being experimented upon. Of course, since she's got mutant psychic powers, she picked up some super-top-secret knowledge from someone's brain, a big Alliance coverup, but it's buried beneath layers of psychosis. The movie is partially her journey to unearth this secret, both out of her head and out into the public...

She's also got some behavioral conditioning we didn't previously know about, and stumbling upon a trigger turned her into a fucking badass ninja killing machine on a random planet they had stopped on. She kicked Jayne's ass and almost killed Mal!!

Book and Inara are not on the ship when the movie starts, and Book never gets back on it. Turns out he's created himself a little Abbey on a planet named Haven, and the ship goes there to hide sometimes. There's very little of him in the movie, and no explanation of his past. Dammit.

Inara is approached by the Bad Guy, who uses her to lure Serenity near. The trap is foiled, of course, but she has to escape back onto Serenity. It's all angsty for a while but then evens out.

All of the love plots get some attention, but not overly so; as in, it was realistic and I was pleased.

Now for the shoe-drop: yes, there is at least one death from the core cast. That's as much as I'm giving you, unless you wanna read the next level post. ;)
