root of the problem

If anyone is curious why I'm so fanatical on being financially independent, excerpt from a phone conversation with dad:

Julia: It's the starter. Luckily only a $205 repair, I can cover that. It leaves me with less than I wanted to have for the trip, but I won't run out of money.

Dad: Well, I'd like to help you, but taxes hit me harder this year than I thought. I might be able to help some more around the beginning of next month.

Julia: Actually... that might be really nice. I don't know if Adriana is going to want all of June rent up-front at the beginning of the month, and whether I'll have all of that sitting around at that time. I know that during the month I'll make it, though.

Dad: I'll see what I can do. But, honey, you're going to have to start trying...I mean, you do, but... I can't write you off as a tax deduction anymore, you know?

Julia: Yeah, I know.

Well it's not really a matter of nice or not. If he can't help, he can't. And he said what he said very nicely. If he didn't, I'd be mean and want to finagle money out of him. But I know he wants to help me, it's just hard for him. So I try to take that pressure off of him most of the time, so that I only ask for money when I really need it.
