So today my scale of importance at Pad Thai became clear. :)
I went in at about 2:15, planning on getting a lunch special which would be partially eaten by goldbug when she arrived at the restaurant. I went up to the counter, and Num exclaimed at how they had been so busy all day, they had 70-80 customers over the 3.5 hours they're open for lunch, and they were all out of the lunch special food but I could order off the menu instead and he'd make me whatever I liked. "Even seafood," he said, and when I replied that I generally don't like seafood, he said, "If I made it for you, you'd like it." Hehe. I asked him if, when goldbug arrived, she would be able to order off the menu as well, and he said yes of course. So I sat down to wait for her.
She arrived, and we debated over the menu. I went up to get us our drinks while we were waiting, and remembered to ask Num if I needed to be free on Sunday for some mysterious thing. He ended up asking me if I wanted to go to lunch with him! I said sure, and gave him my phone number at home, and we figured that he would call on Sunday and then I would give him directions and he would come pick me up.
Back at the table, goldbug and I decided that we wanted to split the 'spicy stir-fried' with chicken and vegetables. When Num came over and we told him that, he kind of made a thoughtfully disapproving face, and he asked me what kind of noodles I had already had from the restaurant. I said, "Well.. regular pad thai noodles.. and the flat noodles.. and glass noodles.." and he asked, "Not egg noodles?" and I had to reply no. So he said he would make me something yummy with egg noodles. He then turned to goldbug, and we told him that we were planning on splitting our meal. He said that we didn't need to do that, he'd make her something. So we said to just make enough of the egg noodle stuff for both of us, and he agreed.
I also took the time to say, "By the way, Num, I don't know if this is what you meant, but I have a boyfriend... I still want to go to lunch with you on Sunday though!" and he laughed and said, "I know, I know... I want to take you to meet someone!" and went on to tell me that his boss, the owner of the store, noticed enough checks with my name on them that he asked about me and found out that I was a daily customer and friends with Num and them. So he wants to meet me! And Sunday afternoon, there's a party or a meeting or something of the Thai student association, and Num is going to take me! I thought that was really cool.
Then Num brought us free spring rolls... three of them... fresh and hot, yum. And then we got delicious egg noodle stuff, with chicken and all sorts of veggies. It was yummy. It turns out that Nui was there, and had been our cook! I said that if I had known that, I would've asked for basil chicken with mushrooms and no green beans and seen if he came out to look for Rachel. I told him that Rachel was having a baby, and he was really surprised and said, "Well that didn't take them long!" :)
Num came over again and asked goldbug what her name was, to which she replied Kara, and he said, "I'm Phillip." She said, "You're not Num?" and he said, "Well, Num is a nickname, and Phillip is the American name I use... and then I have a real Thai name," which he said, and sounded like Pum-EH-lo. But he said we could call him Phillip or Num. And it turns out that Nui's American name is Nicky!! :)
And then, the best part... Num told me that next week, I only have to pay for 4 days of lunch special, and come in for 5. *flex*
I am happy. I'm the Pad Thai Queen.
