Turns out that the pilot was off, which is amusing to me because it makes me think of my dad and brother (both pilots). Now the guy is fiddling with it and I can hear that the pilot is back on, but no air is blowing. No bouncing ball noise, either (those of you who have heard it presumably know what I mean, I know Jason does).

Aha! Just kicked in. A lot softer than ever, too! Maybe that problem has been fixed!

As soon as this guy leaves, I'm going to the lab for some dorking. And to get paid. ;)

yeah, bouncing ball. it woke me up a lot at first last winter, but then i found it reassuring. it doesn't make that noise now?
glad it was an easy problem and it's fixed now. you should not be without heat!

Nope, the noise is still being made. Right as I came in the door just now, the heater turned on, and the noise started. The maintenance man said that we can call tomorrow to have someone come and pull out the fan in the heater and clean it out and that would fix it, but I don't think it's that big of a deal.

it's not broken? i guess i should turn it up the thermostat and see if it wants to do something useful.
