By the way, The Destroyer has started posting again. If you don't want to read daily posts by my stomach, don't add it to your friends' list. If you do, add it. It's rather boring though, it's basically my weight loss diary.

The subject line of this post is what I put into google last night to see if I could get some advice on how to deal with my very bad nervous habits. However, all I got was some stuff on canker sores, and a LOT of porn (I guess those words are all regular words to show up in a porn story). So I'll just post here for those who haven't heard about it yet, and see what comes up.

I have a chewing problem. I chew on my cuticles, my nails (sometimes - I've quit that as my major habit, and that's how these others started up), and worst, on my lips and the insides of my mouth. I chew, and tear skin off. It's probably very bad for me. I tear off dead skin, but I also tear off the new skin that is trying to grow in.

I think the best way to fix this would be to have some kind of thick plastic cover that I wear over my teeth for a few weeks. Kind of like taking apart a denture holder and putting it in my mouth. If my teeth can't reach things, they won't chew them. An alternate to this is something like the little shields you wear in your mouth at the dentist when they're taking x-rays of your teeth. That would also block my teeth from my mouth.

I've tried keeping my lips slathered in lip gloss/chapstick - but that doesn't solve the inside-of-the-mouth problem. Which I think is the worst of them all. Having skin on the insides of my cheeks is probably a good thing.

Goldbug gave me the idea of piercing my tongue to have something in my mouth to play with. I guess now I'm the closest I've ever been to seriously considering that. There's a possibility that it wouldn't fix the problem, but who knows. However, that's a rather expensive and painful fix. And while I am trying to lose weight, I don't want to go however long it takes without eating yummy solid food. Maybe someone who has had their tongue pierced should tell me about these things, though.

So, ideas?

And if we're hanging out and you see me moving my mouth in weird ways, I'm probably chewing and you should yell at me. I know it's visible because Jason makes fun of me for it. Yet another reason to quit.

I don't make fun of you!

You should try gum.

Yes you do. You wiggle your mouth around imitating what my mouth does.

Gum doesn't work. I still chew.

I do not! And if I do, it's totally unconscious and not intentional!

You have done it before quite conscious and intentionally. It was on the T sometime. You pursed your lips to the left, and then to the right.

... and I'm telling you it was not! I always do that, ask my friends/sister/pareents! :P

So even if I did, you're making this blanket assumption that ever time I twitch my lips I'm poking fun at you?

Women!

Nope. I only know that you did it the one time.

Screw Instant Messenger, we can just converse through this.

I used to smoke and chew on drinking straws, metal pop tabs, and the little plastic rings on soda bottles. Now when I feel the urge to put something in mouth, I microwave a burrito. Maybe you should just eat more.

heh. I'm trying to lose weight. And it's not like I feel an urge, I just find myself doing it.

everyone looks at me weird cuz i chew the inside of my lips and cheeks heh, they all think i'm the only person in the world who does it, yes i bite my nails/cuticles too, and since my thumbs are double jointed i tend to bite the skin inside where they flex, i'm really weird ;-) i end up usually chewing on anything i can find, pens, pencils, rubber bands, plastic bottle O rings, gum, silly putty if i'm desperate... nothing really works for me, shrug.

I don't have the thumb problem. If I find a fix, I'll let you know.

I think it's amusing that the two of us have an oral fixation. ;)

I'm not sure a tongue piercing would help - when they're played with a lot (or at least in Corch's case) the hole turned into a slit because the barbell was being pulled.
A friend of mine had a nervous thing where she pulled out her hair so much so that she had a bald patch on the back of her head. She went and saw a naturopath and whatever this person did helped her and made her stop, although I don't know exactly what the treatment was, sorry:) You could try talking to someone like that. I think the good thing about them is they take more than just the problem itself into account and look at you more wholistically.. not that I'd know, never having been to one, but several people I know have found them really helpful.

Hrm, interesting. I will check that kind of thing out. I'm guessing it could definitely be OCD...

you could ask your dentist for one of those retainer like things that keep you from grinding your teeth. at least it would give you something to chew on. i think you're only supposed to wear it while you sleep, though.
