On Tuesday, the temperature here in Boston reached the high 20s, if you work in °C as I am wont to do, or the 90s if you work in °F. People pulled out their short-sleeved shirts, their shorts and skirts, and their sandals (if they were the kind to have put such away in cooler weather.) In my office, my coworkers turned on the A/C for the first time this year, and found that in some way it was malfunctioning. A slight trickle of air was coming out, not the normal high power. The windows in the office were opened, and the temperature inside was rated at least at 83°F at one point.

I felt fantastic. I was in (appropriately business-casual) pants and a short-sleeved shirt, near but not next to the window, and for the first time all year I was comfortable and didn't need to reach for the sweater or the USB-powered electric lap blanket I keep at work. Sure, when I first came in from outside I was hot and sweaty, but after a while of sitting at the desk drinking the cold water cooler water, I equalized to a great temperature. At the same time, my coworkers were bringing fans in from the storage room to set up at their desks, and one of them ended up leaving early, claiming the heat had "sapped his energy."

Today the temperature was in the high 60s. I wore pants and a long-sleeved shirt - a thickish one, not button-down - and a PolarFleece jacket. I walked into the office to find the A/C had been fixed and my coworkers had taken it upon themselves to go ahead and decide that it was time to be on for the season. The office temperature claimed to be 72°F. I didn't remove my fleece all day. Through all layers, at times I got goosebumps. I avoided the water cooler water, getting myself hot water or tea all day instead in attempts to get my body temperature up.

It is really, really inconvenient to have a temperature comfort range 10° different from the people one is forced to spend most of their time with. With the A/C now on for the summer and moving my desk (near to the air vent) not an option, I literally have to dress for winter to avoid shivering through my day at work. Except if I actually dress for weather, I swelter on the way TO work, when I'm walking through comfortable 80°+ temperatures and want to have bare arms. Yes, this is easily solvable with undershirts, but easily solvable doesn't equate with preferable. I just want to be able to spend my time in a comfortable environment, dammit.

To the inevitable suggestions: space heaters aren't allowed in the office, moving my desk has already been shot down, I've WELL informed my coworkers and boss of my discomfort but I'm the odd duck out, I try not to go in with wet hair anyway, I've already started the hot water regimen, and all blood tests so far claim my TSH and T3 levels are fine. If you have something to suggest to keep myself warm outside of those realms, I'm all ears.

I don't have any suggestions, but I now have the opposite problem. I get SO, SO hot in my office. I could barely wear long-sleeved shirts to the office in the winter unless it was below freezing outside, and if I dared to wear a light sweater, I'd be uncomfortable all day. So I'm wearing short-sleeved shirts all the time and I'm still hot. It's getting bad enough that I think I'll see a doctor soon.

Interesting! Humans are neat. I just wish in ways that were more comfortable to us. ;)

Which part, exactly, was heroic? ;)

Keep a snuggee in the office?

I'm usually hot, and the problem in my office is that we open windows (without screens) and we let wasps in.

Well, like I said, I have sweaters and USB-powered electric blankets, so snuggie-like needs are covered. I just wish I didn't need them!

You are definately not alone in the heat loving portion of the population. I find myself wearing/wanting jackets when most people crank on the AC.

I've always noticed feeling a lot colder when the outside temperatures are colder than the AC settings. No sun beating down to warm the building up and offset the AC. Makes for miserable shivery days.

I am totally with you. We play "war of the thermostat" all the time here at home.

No good suggestions. Fingerless gloves?
