I have said it for many years, though I think since '96 or so I've only done it once, but this year -- come celebrate Ash Wednesday in the proper manner: watching Army of Darkness!

Gather starting at 6 (and probably food ordering around this time), movie starting at 7, you're likely to get kicked out at 11-12. Location is tentatively Skullcrusher Mountain in Davis Square - please ping me privately if you don't know the address.

Beads optional. ;)

Tomorrow.

Today is Fat Tuesday. Have you not thrown any beads yet?

There have been no bead-related incidents in my monkeysphere. Also, that does not answer my question as I would still need to go to Wikipedia to verify when the two days are related.

I dunno, I've never been Catholic or lived in New Orleans and I still know the relationship between the two... sorry for assuming similar knowledge bases.

But, tomorrow!

I know this is about the right time for Fat Tuesday - we were in Italy for Mardi Gras during Spring Break so we're a week earlier than I'd've guessed - but somehow I had assumed that Ash Wednesday was a lot closer to Easter.

Fat Tuesday is the feast day to celebrate the start of lent, which is Ash Wednesday. They HAVE to follow each other, by definition. Tomorrow is the first day of lent, therefore Ash Weds. That's the relation.

While I knew that Fat Tuesday/Shrove Tuesday was the feast day to celebrate Lent, I had forgotten/never known that Ash Wednesday was the first day of Lent. So, your irrefutable logic requires information I did not have.

But now you have it!

*happy dance*

And all is better!

Same here. Lent and associated holidays not celebrated in my monkeysphere, but I still am aware of when/why they exist... I'm the same way with Hanukkah.
