londo and I have made it up to season 6 on The West Wing, leading me to now know that two of the episodes of the show I had seen before any others were King Corn and The Wake Up Call. I recall one other episode involving some cast members gettin' it on that gives me some small measure of incentive to continue watching (that, and closure!) The show was fanTAStic for several seasons, but the number of dropped storylines so far in seasons 5&6 make me very grumpy. I told him tonight that the quicker we get through the rest of the show, the sooner I make a stronger move towards getting a job, so we're likely to wipe out the rest of season 6 tonight. ;)

I am reading through Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. I'm apparently the last person in the universe to have not read them. I started with a few out of order: Monsterous Regiment, The Wee Free Men, and Small Gods, and have since begun at the beginning with The Colour of Magic and read, in published order, The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites, and Mort. Next up is Sourcery - back to Rincewind, yay!

On the gaming front, we now own Guitar Hero (both 1 and 2) and I get much enjoyable time out of that both solo and playing with londo. I'm on my second try at Chrono Trigger, playing along with an internet friend, although we haven't coordinated at it since before Christmas break. I should get on that.

I'm knitting my father and step-mother an afghan.

I have read but few of the Discworld books, myself. I started reading them when they were new, but after about the third or fourth, I decided that he was going the way of Piers Anthony, and stopped. I gather I was incorrect in that appraisal, but I haven't yet taken the time to get back to him...

I don't know what you mean about "the way of Piers Anthony" so I cannot comment on that, but londo keeps telling me that Pratchett gets BETTER after these first few books. Perhaps they do involve a chance. :)

Piers Anthony has written many lengthy series. The first book of each was generally quite interesting and enjoyable. The ensuing descent of quality was always fairly steep, unfortunately. I gave up on even his "first books" ages ago.

While I felt that there was a dip in quality in Discworld from the first through the next few, the near-universal acclimation that Pratchett gets leads me to believe that he did turn it around.

I feel pretty bad about Piers Anthony as an author in general. Terry Pratchett's books definitely have some... accumulated features? as the series winds on, but this does not stop them from being good books, and they definitely get a lot better after the first six or so. (Apparently the first six he mentally classifies as "old Discworld" and the later ones as "new Discworld." I personally recommend reading Small Gods, which is a good standalone book.)

I love discworld but rincewind... bah! Trav and I keep them in the car so I can read them to him on long roadtrips. The latest one, Lost Continent (I think) that's based on Australia is the first of his that I haven't really enjoyed much. Bring on the guards and the witches, I say!
