juldea: (bellydancer by stillvios)

So those who have been keeping track know that I have serious issues with improvising when it comes to bellydance. My instructor knows this (mainly from the times I've burst into tears in class.) Hence, when she announced a couple of months ago that instead of a recital this semester, our class was going to do a night at a Middle-Eastern restaurant with a live band, she didn't even bother asking me if I was interested; she just said, "You're not ready yet," and went on to schedule others.

In the months since then I have been showing some more backbone in class, trying to actually work on this phobia. Last week I hesitantly volunteered to improvise a 1-minute drum solo and did pretty well (failed in the last few seconds, but drum solos are HARD!) In the last half hour of class she put on a full 25-minute, 5-part routine and had everyone just dance and I kept up throughout the whole thing, woo! I was feeling well.

So, tonight. She's going over the schedule of performers for the restaurant show on the 8th.. and someone on the list who hadn't been to class in two weeks pipes up with, "I'm not going to go." A week and a half before the performance... and now they're missing a dancer.

So I opened my big fat mouth. ;) You see, the girl missing was going to do a veil piece. Veil is the ONLY thing I've really ever improvised with and not felt like total ass. So I volunteered to try. Amira (the instructor) was having people run through trial songs in class anyway, so she had me do one... and she was evil with it, too, playing a really long song so that I was pushed to think of stuff. Grar!

That said, I did it. And I'm gonna be in the show. Improvising. To a live Middle Eastern band. Squeee!

So, as I was saying, the real news is that
I'm going to be in a bellydance performance on the evening of Thursday, December 8th, at the Athenian Corner Restaurant in Lowell, MA.

You're welcome to come and show moral support, but please keep in mind that we are occupying this restaurant for the evening and keeping its actual patrons out, so please plan on eating dinner there. You will probably need to make reservations, too (apparently the last time one of our classes tried this, they broke fire code regarding number of occupants and had to send people away.) Also keep in mind that I will be doing ONE piece, probably no longer than 5 minutes total (although there will be lots of other hot dancers too.)

There are three half-hour shows: 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30. I believe I will be in the 8:30 show, but I will let you know for sure when I know for sure.

The address is 207 Market Street, Lowell MA. According to folks in class, there's parking next door and across the street.

Um... let me know what else you need to know. Until then, I'll be off freaking out. I mean, um, preparing. Yeah.

Ohh yay, someone who knows the place! Glad to hear the food is good; people in class mentioned the desserts and the size of the dinners but having another opinion is always useful. :)

Too bad you can't make it. *hugs*

I'm certainly going to try. :)

Does that answer your question about what's going on with dance?

Nifty - I'll be flying in (I hope; stupid boss needs to get my vacation approved) sometime between the 17th and 20th and flying home on the 25th, so before-holiday time is really all I have.

time?
