Dear friends,

In 9 days I will be trying my first taste of the Australian wonder that is Vegemite. I understand that some love and some hate this concoction. To those of you who love it, is there a manner in which I should specifically attempt to try it in order to enjoy it? On a cracker? A piece of toast? I have no clue. Please suggest options. :)

Educated friends suggest that you use it to top raisin toast.

I think I've only had Vegemite once, but it's similar to Marmite, which I've had more regularly. The key to both is to remember that if a little is good, more is not necessarily better! Spread it as thinly as you can.

And while it looks like chocolate frosting (actually, I think this is less true of Vegemite than Marmite), your housemates won't properly appreciate it if you spread it on top of brownies. :)

On buttered toast, and very VERY thinly. Slather it on and you'll regret it.

buttered toast or on top of a cracker - like a wheat thin with some cream cheese on top.

I was told by a Kiwi that you treat it like butter and not jelly. A nice thin layer like everyone else is saying.

Toast

I like it on toast, though I preder marmite.
It can be used as a condiment and I think it goes well with adventurous greens.

You can actually get Vegemite at some gourmet stores in Oklahoma now. I've been wanting to try it, but I've been too scared. Let me know how you like it!

can use it on toast or crackers (I love it on both) - more butter than vegemite...

less is definitely more...until you decide you like it :P I generally use shitloads, but then I'm used to it...when I was a kid it was a little bit on a lot of butter on toast..

Bleh! Hope you like it more than I did ;) The three main 'kiwi'(aussi) things were vegemite(marmite), wheatabix and tim tams.

Tim tams = Yes!
Wheatabix and Vegemite= Dear God, no!
At least in Larken's book ;)

The fans of chocolate covered pretzels would disagree.

Chocolate covered pretzels aren't so bad..

Vegemite just has a completely different taste...but then, there's no accounting for taste :)

And weetbix with raw sugar and hot milk = mmm....

On dry toast. I suppose thats part of the problem. apparently there needed to be a liberal application of butter. I'm still not convinced on the weetabix (I would swear there's an 'a' in there in NZ) as I tried shoveling sugar onto them. Still wound up asking Jen to send me several boxes of Cheerios.(The ceriel, not the sausage)

Snuck across from corch's LJ...

The thin layer on buttered toast is good, but the best ever way to eat evegmite is on cheese and vegemite toasties! Toast a piece of bread lightly, then spread a thin layer of vegemite over it. Top with a thin layer of cheese (do not use crappy plastic cheese slices - use real cheese!) and pop it under the grill (broiler?) until the cheese is nicely melty and starting to brown. Divine!

Listen to this.. uh.. man? Person.. whatever! he is RIGHT. Some people also like it on a sandwich with cheese.

I disagree.. I think plastic cheese goes well with vegemite! and reminds me of my childhood;). Probably won't have the same effect for you though, Julia.

I'm definitely a person.

Also, you should try Marmite, the Uk equivalent of Vegemite. Nicer, IMHO.
