The good news first: I didn't spend too long this morning attempting to get VNC to work on my home computer. When I got to work I called RCN and set up the phone/internet at the new place to be installed on Friday. There's nothing critical I need to do online tonight. In fact, I need to do around-the-house things and ignore the computer.

The bad news: Internet at current home turned off today (I hadn't been prepared for this.) This means that, except for work, I will be offline until sometime Friday. :( What this REALLY means is that during work hours, if you need to reach me, send me email. Outside of work hours, call my cell. Or send me a text message, but it looks like I can't message you back, so include a phone number or something if you need me to respond.

Sheesh. Kids these days!

Some time ago, I moved to a rural town in New Hampshire. It seemed development was happening faster than infrastructure improvements could keep up. There were no cable modems back then, nor mobile phones in any practical sense. When I called the phone company to get a phone line hooked up, they told me that they had a shortage of lines in town, and I could be put on a four party line. If I wanted a private line, I'd have to wait at least six weeks, which I did. In the meantime, I could walk down the road to the store in the village, and use the pay phone there. That was back before I was getting home email, so I could read everything at work, as needed.

Even back at that time, it seemed horribly quaint and old fashioned, and while it all happened, it was more recent than you might expect, and I'm really not as old as it makes me sound. :)

Hehehe. I'm aware of how privileged I am. ;)

Also, I do not think you're old. At all. :)

My family had a party line when I was a kid! And I'm only 21. (We lived in rural Oklahoma and Texas.) I also know people in my hometown who still don't have the Internet.
