During my freshman and sophomore years of high school in Rocklin/Loomis, CA, I hung out with a specific group of guys pretty much exclusively. If I attempt to express to you just how important they were and still are to me, ten years later, I'll just end up ranting a lot and still not feeling like I get it across to you fully, so I won't. However, I will share something neat with you:

One of the guys was [livejournal.com profile] guvnor, whose family has been in the process of building their own house for the past 28 years. The House (or The Big House) was the site of many hijinks and happenings and remains one of the major mental landmarks for me of my times there. guvnor has used his new digital camera to photo-document the house in a recent LJ post, and I wish to share this ... monument with you. It'll probably suck for dialup users, though.

"Now, I don't think my dad set out to create an impenetrable zombie-proof fortress, but that's certainly what we ended up with."

THAT is an amazing house. I love it. My wife would hate it. :)

I didn't realize you grew up in a role-playing game. That makes so much sense...

Wow! It's even got Jeffries' tubes, with rung ladders!

Well, I didn't grow up there... just had a couple particularly character-building years. ;)

That house rocks. That's the kind of house I'd love to live in (and build).

I hope to build my own quasi-mansion someday, and it may take me thirty years too at the rate I go on my projects... But for god's sake, I'm not going to build some post-apocalyptic blast-proof Flintstone-Star-Wars-hybrid-style thing. I mean, its idiosyncracy makes it cool in some ways, but come now, really... It's ugly. It looks more like a parking garage designed by Dali than a house.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised; your friend's dad evidently concocted this idea sometime in the late 'sixties or early 'seventies... and this thing is definitely "far out, man."

*shrug* I know the outside is pretty rough, but I assume that it will go through more changes before it's done, ending up looking a lot nicer from up close. From afar, the highway, it's a huge grey castle on the highest hill in town, and looks damn awesome.
