How accurate is I, Claudius?

It's fun to watch, at least. Although I'm having to make a family tree. ;)

I have never actully seen I Claudius. I've heard that it isn't far off...

My memory is that it's pretty accurate on facts (who did what to whom, and when), less so on behavior, motivations, flavor, etc. Bear in mind that this memory is older than you are...

Heh. Taken into account! But you're just discussing characterization, yes? Not so much the historical accuracy of the settings/clothing/etc?

That's right: I'm rating accuracy of events high, and characterization uncertain, and material culture I'm not rating at all.

Clothing I really need to see it. For the most part, movies are just not a good source for more authentic-ish SCA costuming. (I can't tell you how many times I've had to bite my tougue when I hear "It's based off something I saw in Gladiator!") Some movie are better than others, and Roman tends toward the "what the hell is that?" end fo the scale.

Sparticus, for example, has the "flavor" of the Roman Empire down very well... but the individual costume pieces are pretty eh. It was amde in the 60's, and looks it. Doesn't keep me from loving the movie, however.

I know the book is very accurate, if the movie is adapted strictly enough from the book, it should be very accurate.

according to imdb.com - its very well made and historically accurate (the 70's era miniseries) - The film done back in the 30's is probably pretty accurate as well, but probably not as finely tuned as the miniseries due to lack of options in the 30's for that sort of thing.

Yeah, but I remember I, Claudius being praised for that kind of accuracy... At least, we watched it in Latin class in high school; the same class wherein the words Clash of the Titans could not be uttered. ;)
