Have now experienced a Seder (sp?). Have a bunch of jumbled concepts in my head that will need some personal straightening, and I'm not even talking about Kosher laws. *grin*

Erm, I realize that sounds vague. It's simply referring to the opening of one's eyes/mind when surrounded by a very different culture... Process time is needed.

But after sleep time. Nuuungnnghghhh....

oooh, a seder. I wish I had gone to one this year. Did you like the food? When my aunt had seder, the menu was basically Thanksgiving stuff minus the things you can't eat for Passover. :) She would make fried matzoh and matzoh meal latkes for breakfast the next day -- SO GOOD.

It was very good food! I don't know the names of everything (well, except the simple stuff... mmmm matzoh!) but I guess the only universal bit that I really liked was the apple/nut/wine stuff. That was awesome. The rest was whatever was brought in by friends and family, of which there was a great chicken and potato dish (tpau and learnedax, whose family was hosting, made that one) and an avacado salad I particularly liked.

I used to go to one yearly, done by a friend of the family. She was doing it in another state for a while, but started back up this year. Had to pass over it (heh) because of the kiddo, though.

What I always found interesting is how individualized it is - every family seems to have their own traditions. The one I went to regularly always did something called "The Riddle of Numbers" which none of my Jewish friends had ever done at Passover, and they told me about customs which never showed up in the one I went to.

noone really brought anythign except hte pickles. my parents ar ehte only ones of these peopel who keep kosher at home, so everything had to be made in their kitchen...

the "one, who knows one?" that one? if so it is in the Haggadah and almost everyoen does it... if it is a different one, describe?

Hmm.. my friend's brother did a thing wherein he quizzed the kids about what numbers are used in the Haggadah... any similarity to the Riddle of Numbers?

nope, we cooked there, my grandmother made the potato blinzes there on thursday, my mom made the chicken, the vegies, the salads, the gefilte, the horeset and the soup. peopelbrought drinks, and the canned pickles (closed containers are kosher if htey say so)

That's the one I'm thinking of. None of the people I've ever asked about it (although, admittedly, this is only three people) had any damn idea what I was talking about, so it's good to hear that the tradition is pretty widespread.

(I could always remember one lord our God who made heaven and earth and thirteen attributes, but I had a hell of a time with eight days, nine months and eleven stars for some reason. On the other hand, I was nine at the time, which might have had something to do with it.)

it's in the back of every Haggada i have ever seen, with Had Gadya and Dayenu...

i always had problems remembering 6 and 11 and 13... though i have heard 11 bingthe steps of Jacob's ladder, not stars...

Hmm. I heard it was eleven stars in Joseph's dream, but who knows. My memories of this are pretty ancient at this point.

Let's see... the ones I remember:
