So, yeah. Left my purse at the bus stop this morning, realized so about 30 minutes later, called housemate to go get it, she reported no purse at the location.

Fuck.

I have called: the bank, all credit card companies, the MBTA lost and found, the Somerville Police, and my pharmacy (for refills of the meds I kept in my purse)... pondering calling the IRS (since my social security card was in there - yes I'm dumb), and still need to contact the RMV to get a new license (luckily my passport was safe at home, so I have some form of ID for a while).

Sigh.

the IRS doens't care about your ss card... you can get a replacement from the SSA.

The problem is the threat of identity theft.

i know, but hte IRS still doens't care, they JUST deal with taxes. your SS# really isnt' what is an issue for identity theaft, it is the credit cards. your SS# is so many places, it is useles to protect it (or almost useless). jsut make sure you deal withthe cards. also if you phone wa sin there, call your cell company and put a stop on it. same on your checks and your bank card

Not true. Physical posession of the SS card matters a lot. Call the SSA immediately.

According to their website/faq (http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=329) they don't actually do anything if a card is lost or stolen besides ask me to get a new one, which was the plan anyway... Also, to keep an eye on my credit report, which I definitely will.

If it becomes neccesary, whihc God willing it won't be, you can get a new SSN, but it's a ginormous pain in the ass and will cause problems forever... (speaking as a former collections skiptracer)

You can place "fraud alerts" with the credit reporting agencies. TransUnion and Experian.

Yeah, that's all already done, it was the first thing I did when I got to work. Me = not dumb. :)

Also, happily my cell phone was in my coat pocket, so it's still with me. Yay.

[livejournal.com profile] tpau is right... it's mostly painless.

Did USAA send you the Identity Check service annoucement? You sign up for a thing that lets you know of chnages on your credit report? Consider that- with your SSN card, they'd be able to open up lines of credit in your name. Certainly check on it as regularly as possible.

Actually, I have something like that with one of my credit cards, they will send me mail if any new items show up on my credit report. So I think I'm mostly safe in that respect; I will at least see those things if they happen...

Oh, that can't be fun, at all. Best of luck replacing all the stuff, and hopefully there won't be any long term damage.

I'm sure you at least called the bus company/headquarters??, and found out if someone turned it into the driver? I know it's a slim hope, but there are still a few honest folks left out there.

Here is hoping that a person with morals and dignity found it and you will receive a phone call tonight or will receive it in the mail in the next couple of days.
