What knitting magazines/catalogs do you get, and what do you suggest that I get?

Short answer to both questions: As many as possible :-)

Catalogs: I currently get Patternworks and Webs. Perusing the ads in Interweave Knits, there are others I'd probably like to get. I'm thinking of ordering the kit from Yarn Barn of Kansas advertised on page 77 of Spring Interweave Knits, and I'd request the catalog at the same time. There are lots of stores called Yarn Barn, though; someone on the queer knitters email list I used to read owned one in Pennsylvania, I believe.

Magazines: If I had time and money, I'd have a subscription to a half dozen different knitting magazines. But my two favorites are Interweave Knits and Knitters. Vogue Knitting is often nice. I'd like to see that German magazine, Rebecca, especially now that it's available in english. There are several other magazines I've seen on local newstands from time to time, and I'll buy any knitting magazine at least once: Family Circle Easy Knitting, Knit 'N Style, INKnitters, Cast On.. The best two there are Cast On (published by the Knitting Guild of America) and INKnitters.

But all knitting magazines vary a great deal in layout, types of projects, non-project content, etc. I strongly recommend buying an issue or two of a couple of the better ones (Interweave Knits, Knitters, Vogue Knitting, Cast On, and INKnitters) and decide which one(s) you like the best.

There are also some online magazines like Knitty and Knitter's Review.

Woolworks has a list of knitting magazines, but it hasn't been updated in years.

I should be getting Patternworks (except I still haven't!), and when tpau and I make our WEBS trip later I'll sign up there, too.

A woman at my Sunday S&B was giving away an extra copy of INKnitters she had, so I have that. There's one pattern I'm gaga over, but otherwise the stuff is a lot more.. mature? than I want. I was able to see the current copy of Interweave Knits and want a few things from there, so I should probably grab it as well. :) As to the others, I'll just have to check them out... can you get them at knitting stores, as well as via mail?

Usually, the patterns in magazines are like that...there's some good patterns, lots of ok patterns,and a couple of "What were they thinking?" patterns.

I consider a magazine which consistantly has at least one or two amazing patterns in each issue to be good. I also like magazines that have a couple of good non-pattern articles and columns in each issue. I also don't like magazines that group all the pictures at the front of the magazine and all the patterns at the end; I like to see the start of the pattern near the picture, so that's one reason why Vogue Knitting isn't higher up on the list for me. Just a personal preferance.

And finally there's the factor you pointed out about the issue of INKitters you have; your overall impression of the general target audience for the patterns. This is something that can be hard to judge based on a single issue, but it's pretty important.

I don't think I've ever bought a knitting magazine at a knitting store, now that I think about it; I've always either bought them from large newsstands(Out Of Town News, the other newsstand in Harvard Square, or the newstand in Copley Place) or from bookstores (Barnes and Noble, Borders, Harvard Coop). Harvard Coop is nice in that the magazine section is right next to the little cafe, so you can often pull out a copy of all the knitting magazines and sit down at a table to decide which ones to buy. I used to buy magazines in Harvard Square all the time, back when I routinely went home from work via the Red Line and the 66 bus instead of the Red Line to the Green Line. (This was back before the T raised their prices, and I used to always buy a combo pass instead of buying the cheaper subway pass.) Note that different stores seem to carry different magazines; Out of Town News never had Vogue Knitting when I went there but the newstand across the street, outside the Coop, always had it.

Mmm, must buy more knitting magazines.
