Ann(e)

Pros:
  • It fits a lot of different periods and places. (According to the Academy of St. Gabriel, Anne is better for this than Ann.)
  • I can claim it to be a shortened form of another name, expanding the list to even MORE periods and places. (Ann is better for this than Anne.)
  • Buffy chose it. ^_^ (Anne, that is.)

    Cons:
  • Very similar to [livejournal.com profile] tpau's name.
  • Possibly a popular name? I haven't heard it a lot, though...

    What is the (SCA-related) difference?

None that I know of. Some people like one spelling better. Both spellings are period - in some cases, for the same person!

"Ann with and e, it's just so much more romantic..."

Anne of Green Gables, of course. ::Grins::

I've updated the post with a bit more information, including the +e debate. :) Anne seems more well-documented than Ann, but I can end up claiming "Ann" as a shortened form of a lot of different names in different cultures...

Actually fairly uncommon in the SCA. It seems that most people, given the chance to choose a flowery or fantastic name, do so, especially if their birth name is simple. One sees few of: Ann, Jane, Mary, Susan.

Funny - that's almost exactly the reason why I would choose a name like "Ann". In fact, I tried to get people to call me "Ann" as a nickname growing up, but it never stuck.

Having an unusual name can be awfully wearing sometimes. That's why I'm glad I now have one name (since getting married) that everyone can spell & say: Smith. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Possibly a popular name? I haven't heard it a lot, though...

In the SCA, popularity of names is almost exactly the inverse of what it was in the Real Middle Ages. Most people want an "interesting" name, so the names tht were actually common in period, are often rare in the SCA. For example, *no one* is listed in the current Carolingian Liber as "Mary", and there are only a few close variants, despite it being far and away the most popular female name for most of our period. We currently have an Anne of Felding, and an Anne of Framlingham listed in the Liber; that's not too many.

Well, not really. Buffy's parents did. It was Buffy's middle name, and she just went to plan B.

The important thing is that you like it. I'm also going to come down on the side of Anne rather than Ann (which looks unfinished to me), but it's going to be your name.

In my limited SCA social circles, I can only think of one other Ann[e], though she spells it Aine and everyone pronounces it the same as Ann[e].

My reasoning as well. The 'e' just seems to add so much.

Your spelling dilemma amuses me. People in that period could rarely spell the same word the same way twice!

    The two are interchangeable.

    *giggle*

I like [livejournal.com profile] etherial's comment that in period, standardized spelling was uncommon anyway... so I can be both! :D
