I need to make costuming!

I was a dancer... oh, 4 years ago or so. Then I moved and had no class to attend. I started practicing at Manray last spring, and now that I'm back in Worcester, I've finally been able to rejoin my class!

I'm hoping to have access to a sewing machine and enough cashola saved up by thanksgiving break to sew me a costume (or two.. one for regular time, one gothity costume for Manray.

It's been a long time for me... can you give me any tips on putting together a performance piece?

I've never made my own costume, although I have several collections of gear to MAKE costuming... one purple/green costume and one red/white... I have a sewing machine, just not enough time. :P

When you say "performance piece", do you mean choreography or costume?

I'm still in the picking-a-song stage... although I'm leaning towards "Flame" or "After all" (Cruxshadows :) with a possibility of choosing another piece by them instead.. or something more traditional.

I've got ideas of what I want to do in it.. lots of armwork actually, and if I do go with Flame, there will be some veilwork as well..

but I'm not sure of what kind of components a piece should have.. how often I should change moves, how many times I can repeat a move... the class won't be working on performance pieces for another couple of months, but I'm feeling creative. :)

Choreography and improvisation are my weak points, and when I say weak points, I mean that I've never performed a piece that hasn't been written by someone else. My strength in dancing is my ability to learn a choreography very quickly... but when trying to make up my own I panic and totally fail. So, I'm about where you are. This last class my instructor actually had us do some improvisation, which started breaking down my barrier...

I'd say as a viewer, however, that the music is what tells you how long to keep doing a move. Perhaps we should get together and help each other choreograph... I have a piece too! (more traditional than Cruxshadows!) ;)

Hmm. This weekend is Crossroads. Next weekend is Intercon Mid-Atlantic. Weekend after that is trip to Philadelphia (might be time on Sunday night... but probably not). Weekend after that, one of my nights is taken but the rest of the weekend is free, so we can ponder that. The 22, 23, or 24th, depending on my other commitment - I'll let you know.
