Last night at Melville Keep, the home of [livejournal.com profile] alexx_kay and [livejournal.com profile] kestrell (et al), I saw two new-to-me movies that I simply must share with others.

The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra is an amazingly hilarious parody of 50s-60s sci-fi B movies. The writing, direction, and acting are spot-on. The movie balances itself perfectly on the fine line between taking itself too seriously and being so absurd of a parody that it loses connection with its source material. I would definitely recommend this movie to fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The Tall Blonde Man with One Black Shoe was awesome and I want a copy ([livejournal.com profile] gyzki, how do you feel about lending it out for VHS copying?). It's a French comedy about a random John Doe who gets caught between two rivalling factions of the French secret service. It's amazingly clever. And, it has a Dress. I can't describe The Dress; you must see The Dress. And yes, you will absolutely know it when you see it. If you can't find a copy of this movie anywhere, well, you'll see The Dress when I make a copy of it. ;)

Movie night cost me a couple hours of sleep, but it was so worth it.

I believe I remember that dress. I really like its entrance -- or rather, when it is Revealed...

The remake (The man with one red shoe, with Tom Hanks) was amusing but perhaps not as clever.

Ah yes, the moment of The Dress's revealing is an amazing moment.

The "pause... WOW." moments was quite... yes...

I've been half-heartedly looking for patterns... haven't found anything even close yet. Will ask the Historic Costume (it's the 70s... it's history!) List and see if they have any ideas.

I don't think it needs a pattern, just lots of trial-and-error. :)

I'm in favor of any method that works, so long as I get to see the final results!

Although, come to think of it, some of the 'errors' along the way might be well worth looking at :-)

So, can't I be a little regretful that I missed your "ubiquitous" period? ;-)

No. It was more the surprise value of the moment that was noteworthy. I could never carry off such a dress, though, so maybe that's why I wasn't overly impressed by it, either. I think it could be stunning on the right person, and rather tacky on some others.

Yes, but the H-Costume list will porbably have some suggestions on where to find the jersey knit silk... which is what I really think you'd want to go for... jersey knit something, definately...

([livejournal.com profile] gyzki, how do you feel about lending it out for VHS copying?)

I like to respect intellectual property laws -- no, I don't, I like to observe intellectual property laws while dissing them vigorously -- but I can be flexible in cases of excellent pieces that so don't deserve to be out of print. Onset of flexibility can be induced by making a real good-faith effort to locate your own copy first, and especially if you can put me in touch with someone who can copy my Icelandic VHS of Gisli's Saga into an American-format tape.

And of course everyone can't carry off The Dress, that's a big part of the point. But I think the bigger part -- the part that earns its initial caps in my opinion -- is the surprise factor.

*nods* I will make efforts to acquire it legally, then, and keep you updated on that score. :)
