I downloaded a plug-in for Winamp that makes it my alarm clock. Now I get the fun of compiling an "alarm" playlist. Any songs leap to mind?

I used "The Game" (Disturbed) for awhile. Unfortunately, iTunes' Shuffler was messed up, so a few songs down the list was Berlioz' Requiem. If I didn't wake up in 15 minutes or so, I got a snooze-fest immediately afterward.

Heh. I'm not putting anything as comfy as Berlioz on this playlist, no worries. ;)

I don't know that song. I'll check it out.

I've said it before, but now I'll say it for public benefit... Rammstein's Engel. The whistle wakes you up nice and easy. If it doesn't, well... the guitar will when it kicks in.

This is horrible, but anything by Britney will get your ass out of bed in a hurry.

There are actually many Britney songs that I don't mind. Early Britney...

Her first CD isn't bad for canned pop. But it'll still get my ass out of bed in a hurry, because I can't take it early in the morning.

...that's not a healthy sentiment for me to wake up to.

You're worried about getting bad subconscious vibes from your alarm music? I don't think you'll really notice the sentiment of the lyrics at that point...

I will. I've had alarm music influence my dreams, in fact (high school jazz band playing "Leader of the Band"!)

Why not? I certainly do. The part of my brain which parses language[*], and, more interestingly, pays attention to music, wakes up far, far earlier than the rest of me.

Once upon a time, one morning I found myself hearing the local radio host saying something absurd about MIT being denied an NEA grant on obscenity grounds and then something about Aerosmith donating the amount of the withheld grant to MIT. And I thought to myself, "I must be still asleep! Far out. This is a totally trippy dream." and rolled over and went back to sleep.

Boy was I surprised when I saw the newsbox headlines as I hurried (late) to work.

This is why I have two alarm clocks, one of which is a standard claxon, set for slightly later than the radio alarm.

This was actually meant to be funny (hence the Buddy Christ icon).

The beginning of the track starts with the ticking sounds of a clock shop ... followed by every clock in the shop striking the hour of 12.

Sorry for any unintended consequences.

Oh yes, don't worry, I'm familiar with the song. ;)

Yeah, that's possibly the best.

Also Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull, lots of stuff by Led Zeppelin (e.g. Black Dog & Fool in the Rain) and Jimi Hendrix (e.g. Foxy Lady and Purple Haze), O Fortuna by Orff, Enter Sandman by Metallica, the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky if you want something more drawn out, Du Hast by Rammstein...

Carmina Burana makes anything more dramatic.

I currently use the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange or an album of Vivaldi concertos. The key is to find a level of volume between that which fails to wake you up and that which makes you leap out of bed, shut the thing off, collapse back into bed to let your pounding heart recover, and fall back asleep. Something that fades in slowly but eventually gets loud is nice; hence Clockwork. Vivaldi has such energy that it can wake me up effectively even when rather quiet.

on 4 Aug 2004 08:25 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] juldea.livejournal.com
This particular plug=in has that covered - it has a fade-in feature. You can even set the length of the fade! Therefore there's no chance of the heart-attack morning.

Posted by [identity profile] ex-dervish821.livejournal.com
Yeah, but Julia has historically had a REALLY hard time waking up to those fade-in alarms. Maybe it's different with music?

It certainly is for me. I find that the combination of an alarm and snooze button has conditioned me to tune them out, or deal with them automatically in my sleep. Music doesn't do that for some reason, presumably because I have a lot of counter-reinforcement.

My occasional bedmate has an alarm clock that sounds just like a truck back-up alarm, so I sometimes jokingly worry that she or I will be in some backing trucker's blind spot and pass out from habit just in time to get run over.

I think so - music changes and is interesting. It encites my brain to wake up, as [livejournal.com profile] siderea said.

Posted by [identity profile] en-ki.livejournal.com
Also, you want to leave your shades open or put a light on a timer. It's a good way to give your body a warning before the sound sets in, and eventually you'll be conditioned to respond to the milder stimulus so you'll actually be awake to hear your music come on.

on 4 Aug 2004 08:27 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] juldea.livejournal.com
I currently have no shades... but I wake up too early for light to matter. It does wake me on the weekends, however.

I've pondered a light on a timer, especially since I saw somewhere online a full-spectrum lamp on a timer. Battle SAD and wake up at the same time, whee!

on 4 Aug 2004 08:32 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] en-ki.livejournal.com
Yeah, I bought a $12 full-spectrum bulb for a regular torchiere-style lamp and used that for a while. It worked pretty well—I would say better than a plain bulb. Until the winter, waking with the sun would be more than good enough for me. (I can do it just fine provided I go to bed early, which I don't.)

I want an alarm clock, not mental torture!

on 4 Aug 2004 08:51 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] waya3k.livejournal.com
Yes, but you see it drives you to jump out of bed and run to turn the dang thing off. Very effective in getting someone up. Of course I guess any Barney song would do that for you also.

on 4 Aug 2004 09:23 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] juldea.livejournal.com
You haven't known me very long, so you don't know this, but - getting me to jump up out of bed is NOT the goal. Getting me to jump up out of bed and want to stay awake and not return to sleep is the goal. ;) Anything annoying (or depressing) will just cause me to turn it off and climb back in bed.

"Wake Up, Little Suzie"?

on 4 Aug 2004 10:48 (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] metahacker.livejournal.com
I was about to suggest "Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine, aka the theme to The Matrix...but that's only if you like waking up to a huge adrenaline hit. I put it at the end of my "soothing" driving mix in case I was starting to zone out from the rest of the songs.

I also keep a "Wakey" mix on my iPod for listening to in the car under potential-drowsy conditions...

Well, I like to wake up to songs I like and find interesting. Because the part of my brain which says "Hey, this is an interesting song!" or "Hey, this is one of my favorite songs!" wakes up first and can haul the rest of me out of bed.

I had a problem for a while where my favorite station to listen to while going to sleep (space music at 11pm) turned out to be a classical station which played music I really didn't like when I was waking up. I don't care how rousing Bartok is, if I don't like what's playing on the radio alarm, I just go deeper to sleep!

Does it work like that for you?

I imagine it does! I know that the type of music I'm looking for this list is less loud, "alarming" music and more cheery good stuff I'll want to stay awake to listen to. So I guess this request is asking for good music recommendations in general, not just for being awake!
