The vote favored multiple short posts, and those are easier for me to do from work, so here we go. Of course, now I've taken a few days to forget what happened, but hey - if it's important, I'll remember it.
I had brought my luggage to work on Wednesday, so I left at 5pm straight for the bus station. The plan was to take the bus to Providence to meet
londo's mom, spend the night there, and meet up with
londo himself early morning at the airport. These things never go as planned, though, and things ended up with him being in Providence when I arrived! He and his mom's boyfriend picked me up from the bus stop.
Our first stop was his grandparents' house; my first time meeting them. Not much to say that is of interest to anyone besides me and him... They were both pleasant people who seemed to think I was alright, so woo in that department.
Then we picked up his mom from home and went out for dinner at Wes's Rib House, or something like that, which was supposedly the best barbeque north of the Mason Dixon. I was not actually that impressed. ;) I mean, yeah it was good, but I've had better. There's even a place in Somerville, Redbones, that I consider to be better (and yes
londo I will take you there!).
After that it was back to the house to fall asleep in his old bedroom. Awww.
We woke up horrendously early to shower and get to the airport. We had an 8am flight and got to the airport around 6:30. Check-in and security weren't bad and we read as we waited for our flight... I had lent him the first Bureau 13 novel, and I was reading the library's copy of A Game of Thrones. We were luckily one of the first ones onto the plane and were able to share three seats between the two of us, meaning he got an aisle seat and I got a window seat like we wanted. :) Plus we were able to sprawl about and attempt to rest, since we had awakened so early.
The flight turned out to feel shorter than it was (a 2:15 flight gets significantly cut down when at least half an hour on each end is taken up with takeoff and landing), and soon we landed in Chicago. We got our luggage and stepped outside - BAM! - into humidity and heat we weren't prepared for. Phew. It was muggy. Bostonians think we get humidity, but really, it was much worse. Luckily our bus was air conditioned... We had to take a bus from the airport to a train station several miles away where our ride was going to meet us. That was fine except for one really loud annoying guy who kept trying to talk to all the passengers, bragging about how he was "in marketing" and "knew how to get people's attention".
londo and I did a good job of ignoring him even when he tried to use his attention-getting skills on us - talking loudly about how "Grateful Dead fans should agree with him" on some point while staring at
londo. I guess the only people who wear tie-dye are Grateful Dead fans in his head. He also told some other passenger, who hesitantly got into a conversation with him about how she had her work uniform in a bag (to change into later because it was too hot now) that he didn't care if she wore anything at all. Luckily he got off of the bus soon after that. I was very annoyed.
We got off near the train station, walked over, and after a few minutes of cell phone conversation found Pistil (our ride) in another parking lot. ;) He had a rented minivan full of the OMP doorprizes, which he had volunteered to take in Rastafan's place since Rasta got sick and couldn't go. There was just enough room left for the two of us to get in. After a quick stop at Wendy's for food and bathroom usage we were off down the highway towards St. Louis!
londo napped on the way while Pistil and I ended up getting in a conversation about schooling. He's pursuing a PhD in School Administration, which I thought was pretty interesting. The conversation eventually wove its way around to my future and interests, and he had an intruiging idea for me... which I will recount in another post, since it's important in its own right. ;)
We arrived at the hotel around 4, checked in, and after some conniving we were allowed to drive the van to the back of the hotel and use their loading dock and flatbed cart to haul to door prizes up to Pistil's room. He thought it was going to take two or even three loads, so I suppose it's a testament to
londo's box-stacking awesomeness that we did it in one.
After that it was just the normal OMP activity of hanging out in the lobby while people showed up. Bigfoot, Icelady/Tink, Kiri, and Alan (
waya3k) I think were the only ones we hooked up with that night, or at least the ones that went to dinner. My brain was pretty fried so if I forget someone, oh well. We left fairly early - 9 or 10, I think - to go back to
waya3k's to spend the night. He had a pair of comfy leather couches to sleep on, AND a pair of hyper kittens to keep us company. :)
And that was Wednesday and Thursday. Phew.
